first deer with my new rifle

Recommended Posts

i went out in the last week of the doe season to try out my new sako 85 stainless steel synthetic 30.06. and to catch up with the last few does of the season with a friend we arrived at the wood for first light for what turn out to be an uneventful mornings stalk not seeing any deer i was making my way back through the woods to meet my mate by the truck still optimistic and looking for my first deer with my new rifle. as i walked along spying through the woods i could see a roe doe about 140 yds into the woods on further inspection through my binoculars i could see she was an old doe so i put my sticks up and took aim, perfect lung shot. when i got to the doe i took a closer look at her i could see she was in poor nick and when i gralloched her she was barren so she was the right doe to take out. i dont normally take photographs of does but she was my first with this rifle.

Nowt like a picture of the first with the new gun  But loose the habit of hanging the bino`s off the sticks it makes you look like a pretender ;)

Or it could make him look like somebody who doesn't want to lay an expensive piece of optical equipment in the wet gras, where it's easy to tread on 'em, kick 'em, or even drop the gralloch on 'em.

Good result mate.

I dont know why some people need to have a dig, each to there own I say. I can understand if its an un safe act but thats OTT.

Anyway nice picture, thinking about the same rifle in 6.5 x 55

Well i thought i had read/ heard some crap on here, but i think this takes the biscuit!.

Anyway, good to see you are looking after your glass and choosing suitable cull beasts, which if i remember correctly is what we are trying to achieve.

Harry Mac take it from me an expensive piece of optical equipment like the one`s the pro`s use will take a kick and even the like`s of an over weight ex Butcher twist slaughter man sitting on them never mind a peice of slop like a gralloch being dumped upon them ;)

I don't think for one minute our Boulter would take my comments as a dig HarryL? Some of the weaker one`s amongst us might but not our Boulter..

Sorry mate, didn't realise you two were on piss taking terms. Doesn't always come accross as humourous when it's gone via a soulless keyboard. NHF.

Nice doe there bud, quite right she was a good one to take. Nowt wrong with taking pictures to keep a cull record etc... also good for when you infront of the fire nipping scotch :whistling: As for the bino's, you keep at it mate, it a good habit to keep your kit all in one place and tidy or it'll get lost or damaged somehow (not to mention knife, camera, gloves, magazine etc) - especially on ground like that with brush and undergrowth everywhere.

30-06 is a solid cartridge, was there much meat damage at all or did the round just zip throught the ribs?

HarryL - I shoot a 6.5x55, find it a very nice round to shoot with plenty of wallop but slight recoil. It's a noisy bugger mind you so i'd consider putting a can on the end

Ain't it funny how some folk just like to make it there business and develop the "posturing protector" pose when they read something that gets under there skin when in truth is has feck all to do with them..

Now Harrymac i don't know our Boulter and i have never met the guy but from the few posts that i have read posted by him he seems my type especially after seeing that great pile of Deer that the back slappers were moaning about, lol.

Here`s a bit of advice, lighten up a bit you`v been around the back slappers too long

the binos are put on the sticks as i have already lost one set and i dont want to lose another.

A man after my own heart :clapper: I too can lose just about anything unless I'm careful. You keep on doing what you like, it obviously works. Well done!
