cattle dog and kelpie x ?

I had a 1/2 x cattle/grey bitch second gen from simon from cumbria years a go very compact about 21 22 high

A power house would not back down from man or beast

with natural guarding instics

when it was 5 mouth old i went for a walk on a field it was a hot day so i stoped for a rest tyed the dog to my foot and layed back and fell a sleep only to be woak up by the pup going mad 2 blokes was walking towards me

the pup stood guard over me they tuck a wide berth

And loyal never see anything like it got a mate thats good with dogs they just seam to like him you all no some one like this they just have the right high pitch voice or some thing

any way he try every thing to get the pup to come to him the dog din't even look at him only at me it just used to follow me evey were

There is one down side to this breed if you hunt in a gang it will be ok with your friends but their dogs may not if there like mine it was very sly it would move very slowly to a dog give a low growl then strike very fast under the chin bang

But was the right breed for me as a hunt alone and it would watch my back very handy dog

You've sussed me catterpiller mate,in fact both of you have and it was a hancock/newfoundland/water spaniel x really <img src='http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':oops:' /> .I do get out with a mate and his dogs quite regularly and my bitch is sloting in fine,as she's a pup she don't get stuck in on a rabbit with the others(she will back down to a growl from the terriers) but has had a little go at helping retrieve a muntie buck a little while ago.When ever i'm out my bitch will allways let me know if someone is about,she'll even give a little growl at mates coming back over a hill.I don't mind this myself as it is but it does need keeping in check as they are headstrong feckers but thats just because they need to be learning or out doing something,my pup would wreck the place if she was sat idle every day in kennels. .

I don't know if it's still up there, but I've just read a news item on yahoo's home page about an ACD. Apparently it was washed over the side of its Australian owners' yacht and pronounced missing presumed dead. It was found a few months later by rangers on an island where it had survived by dining on feral goats! I wonder how many lurchers could look after themselves that well.

Have to say chaps some outstanding looking dogs there,the kelpie cross looks to be a more racier type than the cattle dog cross.I've taken some pics of my bitch and she is a chunk with "legs like cricket stumps" lol,not quite sure where her thick coat comes from mind.She's five months and a bit now and like i said i'm happy with how she's turning out both in temprement and body,time will tell though.Sheamus i didn't breed the bitch i just had her at mine to rear the litter and find her a new home,the dam is now at a polo stables in the new forest with 2 other cattle dogs to run around with all day.If my bitch proves her worth then who knows what the future brings with breeding her but all thats a few years of work away yet mate.

These dogs won't ever be everybodies cup of tea but real grafters they are and imo probebly nearer to old time lurchers than a modern collie cross,guarding,hearding,catching and not looking like a greyhound.Definetly not dogs for the novice handler but ones caperble of doing anything asked of them.

some very nice kelpie x greyhounds. when I was a few years younger and spent most of my time working every waking moment around cattle and mixed farms kelpies varried in stature quite a bit legy race types were consided paddock dogs and the smaller squarer type were consided yard dogs both had there place around the farms I hung around.

 

Those cattledog x greyhound pups are commimg on fireman, the longer coat could be comming from a cattledog type from tasmania that carries a heaver coat almost long haired. Their are moves in some circles to have this tasmanian cattledog recognised as a seperate varity.

Hi Stevemac, I've noticed a variation in coat amongst kelpies too. My older kelpie and his sire have fairly thick coats with a neck ruff and a brush instead of a tail; people often ask me what kind of husky he is. Whereas both my bitches are the more typical short tight coat.

 

Sheamus, sorry, I missed your earlier comment; I think you're probably right about kelpie breeders wanting to avoid diluting their kelpie lines with collie blood. When I bought my kelpie/collie greyhound lurcher a gentleman from North Wales bought one from the same litter (if my memory serves me well it was actually for his girlfriend and was a red male called Jake). He said that he thought a pure kelpie was "too much of a real dog for the avearage person." I think it's horses for courses really. Each has its good and bad points as does every dog, it's just a case of finding the breed or type or line that suits you.

 

PS Chalkwarren, please put up that amazing photo of Speckle jumping into the sea: that has to be my all time favourite lurcher photograph!
