differant timber for stocks

has anybody seen or heard of a stock that is made from tulip , i have a very large piece and am going to experiment , guy at timber yard who supplied me with this reckons very good for carving and he reckons he has seen a stock made from this , very differant looking wood, also picked up a piece of lovely american maple. whats peoples opinion on this tulip do you think it would make a good looking stock , a couple a pics here .

hi tulip is ok . i work with it a bit as im a joiner. nice wood to work with not to sure id use it for that inless you stain it as it is a bit green. still worth ago would be diffrent. maple would be good

Is Tulip a hardwood?

so i believe it is a hardwood . think this would look good just oiled , would be differant anyway

yeah it would look nice oiled and it is easy to work with. very diffrent specialy if you get a bit with a bit of black grain going through it try it mate

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember an old gun-smith mate from way back telling me you need to be careful with Tulip 'cos if it's not been dried out and cured correctly, it's very prone to splitting.

Like I say, I may be wrong but that might be worth looking in to.

chers for the info and opinions guys, gonna do the maple one first and then i,ll give the tulip a go, i know that this timber has had a long time ta dry out my mate who sought me timber out for me knows it been in undercover sheds for over 2 years from what he know, how much longer than that he doesnt know. think this tulip stock will look very differant , looking closely it has loads a differant colours. will post some pics when i get started on it , thanks again for the info and comments .
