owendbowendb 132
I have a dog pup coming on 7 months thinking of taking possibly another pup. my current dog is a collie grey X whippet , nice social dog good as gold with other dogs. Do you think I would have problems if I took on another dog or would it be best to get a bitch. They would be living in possibly moving outdoors for summer whilst I sort out some decent kennels. Any advice or people who keep two dogs with no probs ? don't want dominance issues going on, prefer bitch. could use kennels for sexual housing for bitch during season but would keeping her this close drive the dog mad ? cheers
ferret15 0
i have two entire males and two spayed bitches i have never had an issue with any of them both my males are placid and the best of friends as long as you are top dog and they are good natured they should be fine. if you want a bitch get one get her spayed then you shouldn't have any concerns. skycat 6,174
It all depends on the temperament and breeding of the dogs. At the moment your dog is still very much a pup so if you try and kennel the two together it won't be fair on the younger pup. Pups get damaged very easily in rough play so it wouldn't be safe to kennel them together whether it is a dog or a bitch. Personally I'd go for a bitch as that way you're unlikely to have relationship/dominance problems. If you keep a bitch in season right next to a dog then that is really unfair on the dog: you'd need to have a solitary confinement kennel and run where neither dog can see eachother when the bitch is in season. If you have both kenneled but they are also allowed in the house then it is quite easy to cage either the bitch or the dog in your house when she is in season. After all its only for a month at the most.
mad al 146
I've four dogs and a bitch and have found that the only flash point is when humans are present and they all want attention and forget the pecking order, but as already sated, they have to know who is "alpha dog", i.e. you

Ive had two major fights among mine in 40 years, both in the summer ,and both because of jealousy around me,I keep 3 males now and their pecking order is established ,2 are kennelled together the other on his own,but I can interchange them if I go lamping swapping them over in their beds.In the day time they have the free run of the garden ,but I dont leave them alone all together as 2 will smoetmes bully the other, and what starts as vigorous play can escalate . Keeping 2 dogs should not be a problem ,but I would wait a little till the one you have now is a bit older.Problems ,if they are going to arise will come once the dog starts to mature from a year to 18 months they start to assert themselves , I find. If you get a bitch you will have the pee marking etc but they should settle down as mates with the bitch usually the dominant one imo.The season have always put me off keeping a bitch but that is personal choice ,most would say bitches are more precocious and biddable and come quicker to hand ,plusses and minuses really.
