borzoi

Hello i have been interested borzois for a while,and herd stories of them taking wolves in russia. i would maybee like to own one in the future, are there any proven lines working in the uk?.The reason i am interested i know someone who owns one but does not work it. The dog is very strong and has exelent feet.What are your opinions on the breed?

I don't know about the situation in the UK but most borzoi here (NL) I would not want to own. You could experiment with a UK bred borzoi but first test if it has prey drive. Most of the borzoi in the western world are crap I think, they have been bred for show not for speed or instinct and are too big for their own good. There are some breeders in the US or Canada who breed more for work I would check them out.

 

A couple of years ago there was an accidental mating here of a borzoi and a greyhound...they at least looked like useful dogs but I have not heard about them since. If you can get a dog from such a source it would be worth a try.

I wouldn't waste your time on one, they are bred mainly for the show ring or lure coursing, they are too big and heavily coated these days. They are very sensitive dogs, highly aloof and appear dumb, my borzoi won't even chase unless another dog is with her. As for wolves, my bitch would run a mile if she got growled at by one!

a few year back a fella had two at coursing after the last slip he was allowed a run they never caught i think he was a traveler claimed he worked them
