You are not obliged to tell the Police, but if you think you are going to get NIMBY neighbours phoning about you or you are going to shoot in a reasonably populated area its not a bad idea to just let them know that you are going. You dont need to go in person, just get the number for your local control room, phone them and advise them that you will be carrying out pest control activities on a piece of land between certain times. If you have a written permission, always carry it with you. If not, make sure you have the name and telephone number of the landowner handy - just in case your message doesnt get passed to the local cops who are flagged down by mrs miggins the local councillor.

Remember if you do happen to be approached by a cop, being pleasant and polite and courteous is the way to go. Ten minutes of your charm and he will probably go happily on his way. If you fail the 'attitude test' then he might choose to take a closer look at you and your permissions. Even if he cant find anything wrong that may well delay your shooting by an hour or more... (Not that I am suggesting a Police Officer would ever do that, but well, you know....)

Where I ferret and shoot, I dont phone the Police because its in the back of beyond, but I do always have my permissions with me.

BASC produce a leaflet about safe airgun use which you can get at a Police Station, if you stick one of those in with your permission it will at least give the cop some pointers of what to look for to explain what you're doing.

Cheers,
