Mr_Logic 5
Personally I'd steer clear of Howa, I have one in 204 which I'm not very happy with. It went to Highland Outdoors for work and their customer service took piss poor to new levels, when I rang to ask what was happening I was basically told to f*** off. There may have been some issues with the dealer and Highlands' communication, but either way their treatment of me and the 4 weeks taken simply to test and restock a rifle is not on, given that the rifle was bought new and I could have demanded a refund (wish I had tbh) Alternatives: T3, but the hunter not the Lite, because the Lite's balance is rubbish CZ550 - I have one and it's a good rifle, reliable and pretty accurate. Savage - very good things said about them, but don't know too much Ruger's new Hawkeye is meant to be good, with (finally) a decent trigger too. Remington - solid but unremarkable, which is great in a workhorse rifle! Edited March 31, 2009 by Mr_Logic Quote Link to post
clivej 0
Try to get a look at a Sako 75 varmint if you can. Very good reports of them. Quote Link to post
Mr Adventure 0
I have a Tikka T3 varmint 223 and Sako 85 varmint 308. Both are superb but the Sako is way ahead of the Tikka as far as quality. You'll find that the Tikka is a cheeper made Sako. I'm having a wee bit of problems with the Tikka , it won't eject the fired case and it also has a firing pin problem. We'll see how long this takes to get sorted from the dealer and GMK? I realy don't like the way the Tikka ejects the case, it's with a plunger and spring type ejector and a resessesed bolt face, the Sako has a fixed ejector a much better system. Both guns are very accurate both with home loads and factory ammo. You cant go wrong buying any of them. Was shooting my Tikka 223 last weekend at 400m superb "Vbull after Vbull". I would also say your choice of 308 is spot on 308 will do it all. You will have a masive choice of bullets if home loading and can shoot cheep ball ammo. If you can afford it go "Sako" All the best.......... Quote Link to post

One of our deer group bought a T3 Lite in 308 and took it back in short order. Apparently touching off a 308 in a gun that light aint no fun. I use a Sauer 202, had it for more than 10 years and it's as accurate now as it's ever been and it's been shot quite a bit. Mine's a standard (old model designation), but another one of my mates has the Outback version in 6.5x55. Niether of us has any complaints about Sauer. Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
I have T3 Lite in .223 and T3 Hunter in .243 and Remington 700SPS Stainless in .308. Choice is yours but I see little or no place for a .308 for fox, so if you want a deer/fox gun get a .243!! Kick on the Remington is excellent for a .308..it is well balanced and has the new butt pad, doesn't feel like a .308 at all. I like Tikka but would NEVER buy another Lite..the balance is crap...TOP Class on the Hunter though! So far happy well happy with the Remington! Quote Link to post
elvolcan 0
How about the Mossberg ATR 100 .308 http://shootersforum.com/showthread.htm?t=40011 http://www.gunweek.com/2005/feature1010.html Does anyone know if these are any good? For only £395 at highland outdoors , they have to be worth a look Edited April 2, 2009 by elvolcan Quote Link to post

The .308, a calibre that shoots bullets from 100grain to over 200, easy to reload not fussy, can be used on targets up to 1000yrds and be accurate. Used by military and police marksmen and snipers around the world. With correct loading and bullet can take vermin (fox) I don't buy into the overkill judgement, muntie right through to rutting Red and bigger in other countries, and has excellent barrel life. Versatility, all rounder, that's the .308 Win PV. Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
I don't buy overkill either, dead is dead. But, for long range shooting 243 is better, for foxes 243 is better. So for the all rounder crown, of the two, then my money is on 243. But the fact remains that either calibre is a versatile, effective one. Quote Link to post

Mr_Logic 5
I know. I was implying that since the 243 is so much better as an all rounder, then the 308 isn't really... Simply because it's rubbish at fox shooting. You don't need all the power, so you end up with a recoiling rifle which has a large amount of drop, when you could have a smaller one which is much more effective, without recoil, and with a flatter trajectory and much better vermin bullet choice. You could use the 308 on foxes, but you *could* use a 300 Win Mag too, so is that an all-rounder? For me, the true all rounder is good enough at any discipline to be recommended in its own right. I'd never recommend a 308 for out-and-out foxing, but i would a 243. And I'd recommend the 243 for deer too, and for targets. Of the 3, the 243 is more capable on deer than a 308 on fox by some margin. All that said, it's clear we're going to disagree here, so let's not argue - no point Quote Link to post
