Malt 379
My dogs are good with my ferrets, they've been brought up with them and work well together. Saying that, I'd never consider leaving them unattended together, but then that's just common sense. Aye its total commen sence but what if a ferret was to escape its hutch or something and you had your dog outside....whats it's natural instinc going to be wheather its been trained to ferrets or not? I'm 99% sure my little JRT wouldn't kill one if it escaped and I wasn't there and it's about 50/50 with the young beddy/whippet I've got at the minute, but getting less likely all the time. I suppose it's like kids and dogs. You might trust your dogs 99.9% around a new baby, but that 0.01% is always in the back of your mind, IMO. Quote Link to post
Sighthound 49
I was having a long debate with my boyfriend about ferrets and working dogs. He is adiment you can train a dog to not kill a ferret...i disagreed as i have read on here [bANNED TEXT] people have owned dogs they thought were golden around ferrets then bang the dogs eaten the ferret..... What do you all think? FM Of course its bloody possible, what a stupid question Working dogs are trained dogs. I would more trust a ferreting dog than a fat pet pooch. Quote Link to post

happyploughman 1
my patterdale grew up with the ferrets. They grew up together and she never touched them. When the ferrets died and I got some more she still was sound with the new ones. Quote Link to post

chalkedup 14
ive got a lakeland x jrt ive had him since he was 3 1/2 and he will kill my ferrets given the chance had a close shave trying to get him used to them and he jumped up and grabbed at my jills tail, she sprayed him and spun round and sunk her teeth into his chin and before he knew it he was upside down as i thought he had hold of her apparently getting a evil ferret to bite your dog will stop the dog going near them again but mine still wants to kill them so has to be indoors when im handling the ferrets bit silly realy as i got the ferrets thinking hed enjoy going out rabbiting with them Quote Link to post

Raymond 618
Hi These 2 little terriers of fox hunters are great with the ferrets. When they hear the ferrets bell they even move out of the ferrets way. Very clued in little dogs. The above lurcher is only young. He has only come ferreting a couple of times with us. After a couple of mins and 2or 3 times the ferret in and out of the holes he was broke to them. He is proveing to learn very quickly. Quote Link to post

The one 8,482
Of course they can be broken to ferrets and are a valuable part of the work force when i had my russell she backed out a rabbit hole with the rabbit in her mouth and the ferret stuck on to her jowls . Then i got up one morning and my bew was under my kennels so he must have been in the runs and my three dogs didn't touch him ,and lastly pedro's lurcher stuck her head in a hole and one of my silvers nailed her so maybe the question should read can you break ferrets to dogs ?? pencoed hunter 7
My dog wont Bite the ferret maybe a quick sniff but not bite. My ferret will bite the dogs though how can I stop this? He's about 2 years old Quote Link to post
JordKil 0
It took me a while to introduce my dog to the ferrets as from a really young age he was always eager to chase things regardless (he was never a hunting dog he was a rescue) He would snap at the ferrets at first so a muzzle was introduced which partly helped. But the key turnaround was when he went for my big bino jill and she turned round and gave him a set in the chest/leg, now he respects the furry stinky things and will move out of their way (kits and adults) but thats just him. And I definantly wouldnt trust him alone with them (common sense) Cheers Jordan Quote Link to post
AL BUNDY 45
have had the ferrets get out there box in the van and travel back with the dogs on the same seat thought this was a wind up at first Quote Link to post
