Here is a debate for you...

Recommended Posts

I was having a long debate with my boyfriend about ferrets and working dogs.

He is adiment you can train a dog to not kill a ferret...i disagreed as i have read on here [bANNED TEXT] people have owned dogs they thought were golden around ferrets then bang the dogs eaten the ferret.....

What do you all think?

Well just look at some of the photos posted on here of dogs & ferrets working along side each other , if dogs are broken to ferrets then it causes no problems

My dogs are good with my ferrets, they've been brought up with them and work well together.

Saying that, I'd never consider leaving them unattended together, :nono: but then that's just common sense.

Aye its total commen sence but what if a ferret was to escape its hutch or something and you had your dog outside....whats it's natural instinc going to be wheather its been trained to ferrets or not?

its natural instinct will be to chase but if the dog and ferrit have been brought up the chances of it killing the ferrit if it escapes is unpredctable the ferret will give as good as it gets and the dog will let go [bANNED TEXT] it figures the ferrit aint letting go of its snowt

as a pup of about 8 months old one of my terriers who is well broke to ferrets came wandering out of the garage where the ferrets are kept, one of them had escaped and latched onto the side of his face. he came to me with the ferret still attached for me to take it away! he has been bitten severel times by my own and other peoples but shows no inclination to bite back even tho show him a rat and he will rag it till its in pieces!

its all down to the dog, and each person knows there own, yes, if a ferret escaped from my court, "jack" the plummer x jrt would eat it, but "smart" the jrt bitch would let me know, follow it, even play with it,

Any new pups that arrive here are ALL introduced to the ferrets as soon as possible.....it is sometimes the case that a pup and ferret kits arrive together.....which makes life easier and they will play together quite happily, eating and drinking from the same bowls. My dogs and ferrets have a mutual respect for each other......and on rabbiting days the ferrets will walk about from hole to hole working, often walking under the lurchers legs as he stands waiting for a bolt......and neither will take any notice of each other. Even my terrier who is a demon on rats......will not look twice at a ferret, its just how you bring them up from pups really......with a bit of careful planning it is relatively easy to break a dog to ferrets.

Thanks rolfe. Looks like you have a good set up pal! I guess that is the easiest way of breaking both parties to another!

Cheers

My old JRTxFoxy was introduced to ferrets in the latter half of her life. I told her to leave it and she did- never once did she touch a ferret.

They can be trained. It depends on the owner and the personality of the dog- some will never be good with ferrets and others will.

That same dog could not be broken to pet rabbits. Never. ;)
