Ferreting Prairiedogs

Recommended Posts

I am planning on trying to ferret prairiedogs this weekend here in New Mexico. I have ferreted 100's of rabbits in the Uk but this will be a first for me.

I have a young hob from the pet store that I have had about six months hopefully he will be keen on the job. The holes are pretty simple just two holers is the norm for P dogs, I will have my old lurcher for picking up strays. I will post pics if anyone is interested after the weekend.

well Prairie dog is the natural prey for the blackfooted ferret in the US so you should have a good ole time...

we'd love to have some pics of that one!

Is it legal then in New Mexico ?

It.s not illegal in NM therefore it can be done. In Colorado it is a legalized hunting method for falconers only.

Don't understand that...surely Birds don't make clean kills unlike dogs can???

Colarado division of wildlife is notorious for strange rules. I think when falconers asked if ferrets could be used to flush rabbits they couldnt think of a good reason to say no. At the same time they didnt want it to become widespread so limited it to falconers. It is a gov reg so it doesnt have to make sense! :hmm:

It would be a very interesting post to put up, have you ferreted prairie dogs before.

No just kangaroo rats and packrats. rabbits here rarely use holes worth ferreting, usually You can reach down and pull them out.

I got the idea to try ferreting prairie dogs when a rancher whos land I course asked if my falcons killed p dogs. I said no but ferreting might work. I will find out his weekend hopefully I wont catch plauge from them.

dirtwinger do you know anyone esle in the states with ferrets. I am trying to get into the sport but would like to get some well bred ones from over here. Let me know how the hunt goes. SSK

I know of a guy in Louisiana who brought some working ferrets over in his carryon baggage from the Uk. He bred them but this was afew years ago, I may have a number but I will have to look for it.

I'd be interested in knowing how it goes, be sure to lather up in flea spray.

Already planned on doing so. I'm actually going out with my vet so he's supplying aerosol frontline, we will also put the P dogs in a bin bag sprayed with frontline to kill the fleas as we go along.

Of course we have to actually catch some P dogs before any of this matters!
