ballo1000 0
Firstly hi. I am a newbie from Nottinghamshire. I have been thinking of getting a bop for several years but had neither time nor land to do it properly till now. I am after advice on the best place to go to do a course and advice on where to meet people so i can start to learn the art and sport of falconry before i take the plunge and get a bird. Any help will be greatly received. Thanks in advance Quote Link to post
harrishawk 0
if i was you mate i wud decide whta i want to keep (harris hawk) then get all your equipment in ready, in the mean time do not read any books or owt because you need to learn things by getting hands on (you cant learn to fly out of a book lol, then ring sum people that do the courses and find out as much over the phne as poss ie; what you will be doing on that course you dont want to be in class room 4days out of 5, you want to be out with the bird you are wanting to keep learning that way. hope this is ok for you pm me if you need any help mick Quote Link to post
trappa 518
now ballo. First, Ignore what "harrishawk" says about dont read any books. You need to read as much as possible on the subject, emma fords art and practice is good for beginners, as is glasiers "falconry and hawking". You will learn loads from books, it wont substitute the real thing, but books are SO important. You need to know about sour crop, bumblefoot etc etc and you need to know about them before they happen. You also need to know the nutritional qualities of foodstuffs too. read, read, read!!! Next, get yourself a mentor. Someone you can go out with, ask questions and watch. Youve done the right thing coming on here as there is some great falconers on here, but just be aware that "certain" Keyboard hunters fly a harris hawk for 6 months and think they are frank beebe, giving duff information in their posts. harrishawk 0
a hope that post was not about me been a computer hunter ive been flying harris hawk long before you were born bye the look of that pic, the only way to learn is get out there and do it not read books and books on what people have on their own experince and every one has a diffrent point you may read a book and it tells you to do one think when your own bird might do somethink completely diffrent. mick Quote Link to post
trappa 518
I think i can categorically state that " in the mean time do not read any books or owt " has to be the worst advise i think i have ever read. And congratulations on flying a harris for such a long time. Your whole ethos is contradictory. The fella has come on here to READ about starting. Youve WROTE some "advice", he will READ it......do you see where i am going here? Reading books is an absolute must. Yes, your quite correct that it wont substitute hunting practicality, and getting out there in the field, but you need to know about sourcrop before it happens, you need to know about bumblefoot, you need to know how to administer certain drugs should the need arise. All these and more wont be learnt from flying your harris hawk in a field, they should be read about prior to getting a bird, and there should be some form of raptor medical literature in all bird keepers bookshelves. I dont want to get into a running debate, or have an argument on here but this is why i am dubious of your "help". To actually tell a new starter to not get any books is , in my eyes, stupid.
