is this a sign of a hungry ferret?

Recommended Posts

as it says my little brother aka nob head should live in the town charv has seemingly not been feeding it regularly and giving his ferret attention as i never see him playing with it....now it is doing two things that indicate to me that he aint looking after it properley

1)it has a three story cage and every time you walk past it goes mental going up and down the levels and making a little chatering noise...is it not getting enough attention as it lives alone?is it hungry?

2)decided to face my fear and through a few dog bisquits in to its hutch but instead of eating them it stored them in its bed, i thought this might be a sign that it isnt getting fed regularly so its storing its food incase it doesnt get fed

i dont know much about ferret behavour but can anyone advice me wether this is normal behaviour or signs of neglect as my mate who bred her is willing to take her back

Check it has water, and provide ferret food, ferret biscuits or meat.

Cat or dog food is no good for them, they either don't eat it or eat and get fat.

They also need attention especially one that is on it's own.

If you want to pick him up feed with some meat first, like chicken or rabbit and that will make it easier.

Also he might be in 'season' looking for a mate at the moment if not castrated.

Well if he isnt looking after it get it a home that will :censored: a hungry ferret will latch on to flesh in a split second , the pacing is probably due to it being in season, they do drop weight when there constantly active so the food intake has to meet the level of activity

Apart from anything else all children in the houseold should be being schooled by the adults to ensure there not neglecting any animals

your first point could be true maybe it needs more attention exercise ect... your second point you could feed a ferret 2 tins of food a day and it will always store food, because in the wild polecats stoor food incase they dont have food the next day then they have something to feed on if hunting wasnt successfull.

oh right it just constantly passes back and forth and has done for months...i would get it out and handle it but as some of you may know iam totally frightened to death and litrally go running if someone opens the door (irational fear i know but im working on it)

so the hiding food thing is natural....but it just seems so desprate for food, could it pase up and down because it is hungry? i have also noticed it going for days without water but am too scared to go near enough to take the water bottle off

Dear me :( the animal needs to be fed to function , surely you communicate with your brother, ask him if its been fed, & i would have thought the simple answer to this problem would be to feed it the catch your dog regularly provides

I've only had ferrets for a year, so am no expert, but I don't think this behaviour is a problem.

One of my jills, Penelope, always does this as soon as I walk into the barn and whistle for my dog. She runs laps round all the levels of the cage, and stores food in the dark places or bed. The other two polecats, Bridget and Anoria, will barely wake up, maybe wander around a bit, and never store food. I got them from different places, so could be a learnt behaviour.

They all seem to be in good health, maybe a bit over weight, but glossy coats and alert when hunting. Even the fat one, Anoria, gets up a good speed when I let them loose to run around in the fields and woods.

and you are ok with it being without water for days???? however scared you are that is no excuse im sorry!!! if you are that scared then MAKE someone else do it!! far better then laying slabs at a sanctuary , make a difference at home first , strips of meat can be fed through bars , and a watre bottle is easy to do with feeding the fleh first , let the fert take the food and hide it whilst you quickly change water??? you say you are afraid , what better reason to break a fear then by attempting to better an animals life

Seems to me every post you put up is some sort of problem...if the fert ain't getting fed & watered by your brother surely you's can sort it out!!! You work in a pet shop don't you?????must handling all sorts of animals & looking after their welfare.

The other month it was people poaching on your land, the other day shooting your other halfs .243 with one hand!!!!IF your in & around fieldsports you MUST have a basic idea of what you have to do it just don't add up :blink: .

I just don't understand the problem here???Confront her brother, get it sorted out...if he can't be bothered with the fert re-home or she takes the fert on herself & looks after it's welfare, simple :wallbash: .

I think i read her other half is a ex-gamekeeper so he MUST have a good knowledge of ferts???It's like Penelope Pitstop"Help, help it's the Hooded Claw!!!!" :wallbash::wallbash:

OK in my opinion your parents are responsible !! tell them, get them to tell your brother to look after it if not get them to get rid of it if he isn't feeding it or watering it he cant be cleaning it so maggots will be the next thing if they are not already. it cant get you through the cage so think of the animal first if it dies of dehydration and you knew its bottle was empty then it will be as much your fault as his. i think he doesn't have the time of day for this animal so it should go to some one who has.
