I've got a local butcher who gives me a massive bag of chicken carcass/bones/skin, with bits of beef and lamb in as well, every two weeks. I give him a fiver for it for kids charity, but a lot of butchers will just give you their bones and scrap meat - you have to watch there's not too much fat in tho, and pork. I don't give mine pork.

There's also a local animal feed place that I get minced chicken from and chopped fresh tripe (it mings!), 25p a pound.

I find feeding raw a lot more cost effective. I just chuck in left over veg, grated apples, pilchards etc as and when along the way.

I too feed raw and love how my dogs look and perform on it, however it's not for everyone.

If i was feeding a dry food Bakers would be my last choice!! It's basically junk food for dogs and the coloured buiscuits are full of additives and chemicals, which can make dogs neurotic, and not deliver any nutritional value.

Burns or James Wellbeloved would be my choice as they are high end and good quality feeds, however they do come with a high end price tag. You get what you pay for i guess.

Beta puppy is a middle of the rd good quality feed.

There is so many differing opinions on the subject, my advice to you would be to read them all and make your own mind up depending on your puppies taste.

With regard to the pup not being keen on her food, this could be as everything is new and she's slightly stressed, it could just be that she's not a greedy dog. If you are going to change her complete meal, do so over a period of 3/5 days, gradually introducing the new feed into the old one to prevent her getting an upset stomach. If she still isn't keen, then add some raw mince well mixed in, beef/turkey/chicken will all be fine. The pup will then be getting a more varied diet as well. I would also add warm water as this will create a gravy and make the feed more attractive to the pup. Sardines in Tomato sauce are an excellent natural source of fish oils to help with joints and coat, also make a nice change for the pup.

I think it's really a case of trial and error, i would offer the pup the food and pick it up after 15 mins if she hasn't eaten it. Good luck with her, she a real sweetie. :icon_redface:

lurchergirl, can i ask why you won't feed pork ? i get most of my stuff gratis from the butchers as well and have never had any problems when feeding it , i've have always believed the reasons behind people not using pork were based on auld wives tales that have no relevance today. anybody had any problems feeding pork ?

Me and my partner have an animal feed shop and hear all the feedback from customers and companies. Also having a feed shop we have tried most feeds where we have been given free bags by reps. So far the best one we've found is Pro Plan...not cheap but its good... Our pups at the mo are having ProPlan puppy and chicken wings/carcasses and look amazing. A friend of ours who won at the Midland Game Fair used to use Beta Greyhound at £11 a sack...tried Pro Plan (adult we sell at £37) before Midland Game Fair and couldn't believe the difference in his dogs. Okay so Beta G/hound is £11 a sack but with Pro Plan you dont need to feed half as much and you don't get half as much out of the other end...and what does come out is really solid. My fella picks up twice a week in the shooting season and his dogs have so much stamina on this food. Wouldn't use anything else!
