go2ground 152
I am curious to find out other peoples training methods with pups, and at what age you introduce prey to them. My pups are nine weeks old and today I stopped by the local pet shop and bought some mice for them they all showed good prey drive and one of them finds the mice to be pretty tasty. Thanks for any tips in advance. Quote Link to post

My pups are nine weeks old and today I stopped by the local pet shop and bought some mice for them they all showed good prey drive and one of them finds the mice to be pretty tasty. Thanks for any tips in advance. Rats from 6 to 8 months, on the tether watching and listening to the older terriers from 12 to 18 months, then one or two introductions in a dig beside an experienced terrier then the from 18 months collared up and allowed ot check earths with an experienced dog checking behind them. very briefly, letting them kill and eat pet mice I can not really see any point in The mice were not bred or sold to be pets, they were meant to be a meal for someones boa constictor. As far as letting the pups have them I thought it help with their prey drive. Thanks for the advice. Quote Link to post

Attack Fell Terrier 864
Yeah mate, giving them mice isn't constructive IMO, they will chase anything as pups, and they'll have plenty of time to chase things that are worth chasing and killing when they're old enough (vermin pests). Just wait till they're a 7-8 months old before you allow them to have a bash at the rats mate, as hand feeding them mice wont do them any favours. Best of luck with the pups though. Tassa 64
If you take a pup on and watch him get older and grow mentally you know when he is mature enough to start work. Some dogs and breeds need more time to start than others. I have a Fell i got as a pup and at a year old he was as immature as anything and took a bit of time but now hes flying. I reckon in around a year old a terrier should start to watch some action and get a rag and then take it step by step Quote Link to post
GameBirdMeg 21
we showed our pups of 5months a charlie the other half had shot. They didn't need no encouragement and stormed in... Next month I'll start putting my rat cages out at our yard and see if I can catch a few to give them a play with. But definately agree they need to be pups while they're young Quote Link to post

TRANSIT690 0
i wouldnt bother with the rabbit training if i were you, rats and then a bit of ragging, afew easy digs not lasting too long and if everything still going ok hopefully you.ll soon get a working terrier, but dont rush the dog or sicken it too early Quote Link to post
Attack Fell Terrier 864
I wouldn't necessarily say you have to trap anything and throw it to them, whether it be rats or rabbits or mice or what ever. Take them when they're old enough to a spot you know is live with rats, and allowing the pups to watch the more experienced dogs go about their business will encourage them and give them the experience they need to do the same. Some pups don't need showing, and they just take to it like they've done it a million times before, others just need showing then it clicks in their heads, that this is what life is all about for a terrier! What I have done in the past with the real young pups is let them rag on a brush for a few minutes, take it from them, hide it in the garden then let them out to sniff it out by themselves. I'm not saying it improves them in any way, but it just gives them something else to do and stimulates the brain better I think, I just think it could encourage them at a young age to use their noses a bit.
