TOMO 26,005
B.P.C.A RUN COURSES GET IN TOUCH WITH THEM. ITS A FEW YEARS AGO SINCE I DID MINE AT WARWICK UNI. 5 DAY COURSE COST ABOUT 1000 QUID. GOVERNEMENT PAID MINE . ALSO 1 DAY COURSES RUN BY KILLGERM IN OSSET WEST YORKS . I STATED WORKING FOR MY SELF ALMOST TWO YEARS AGO. AND I STILL DO A PART TIME JOB. WORKED FOR A LOCAL COMPANY BEFOR. BUT I LOVE DOING IT .I KEEP PICKING UP CONTRACTS, AND MY BUSSINESS IS SLOWLY GROWING. THE REASON I LOVE DOING IT IS THE VARATION, FOR INSTANCE TO DAY I DID A PIGION JOB THIS MORNING FOR 2 HOURS , AMBUSHING THEM OUTSIDE A BAKERS. THEN A RABBIT JOB WHERE I HAVE BEEN TRAPPING. AND THEN I REMOVED SOME BEES .
Guest Duzabit
Like Tommo says, it's a great job if you like the variation, the killgerm courses are very good, I recently passed my RSH and found the course to be very informative. Duz.

ChrisJones 7,975
If you want to get into the industry the BPCA ticket is the way to go but it's pricey. Also if you want a job with a firm you'll spend more time treating cockroaches, in dirty restaurants, than you will ferreting and foxing.
Guest grubygrafter
i always fancied pest control as a job of work. but i'm a realist. and the reality as far as i am led to believe is long hours in all weather. and extensive use of poisons and gas. i would be interested to know how to price some pest control work. and survey techniques.. i am of the opinion that real pest control is not as pleasurable as hobby type control. i may be wrong.... Simoman 110
Used to be a dog warden and the council decided to train us as pest controllers to help with cover. Two different contracts, farms and residentuial housing and I got the latter Dealt with fleas, wasps and rodents but always used poisons, never got the chance to use dog on rats. The only problem with small companies is that the council treated residential properties for free.

It's more than a full time job and there is plenty of work available. The problem is that it doesn't pay particularly well. If you want a job that pays fortunes then it's not a trade to move into. There is money in it but it's very competitive and salesmen drive the value of the job down constantly. You have to adapt to the seasons and you only work more than 40 hours if you want to! Poisons and gas play their part but so do traps, pellets and ferrets. Each individual job warrants an individual treatment and one of the great parts about it is solving the problem in the best way. Very few jobs give you this level of satisfaction and it certainly beats anything else I've ever done. I certainly wouldn't want to leave the industry. I like being hands on but I would fancy moving abroad and tackling some of the more exotic insects that we don't have the climate for. I can't think of anyone that's happy to see cockroaches but there aren't many people that can go ferreting on a weekend, or shooting in the evening, on overtime either... I used to work in an industry that payed me 5 times as much but I took a massive pay cut, to become a pestie, and I certainly wouldn't go back to my old job for 5 times more than I was earning... man cannot live on bread alone. How many people spend 40 hours a week waiting to go hunting on the weekend? Don't need to now. I can do it during the week and take a little wage at the same time. Phil Lloyd 10,738
Pest Control has been a good 'Mistress' to me.... I started off doing the 'bugs and rats' same as 90% of lads do,..but nowadays it ONLYTHECONY for me My advice to any aspiring pester would be to 'do yer homework',.get trained up and preferably 'certificated' and,.FORGET the rabbiting jobs,... Things ain't always what they seem.... Do the basics and wait for the golden opportunities to arise,..

You should see what some of the big firms charge! Think back to the builder that treated a loft space for cluster flies. He got a quote off a firm and thought it was too high so he did it himself... ... thing is he didn't take into account that the roofspace was also a bat colony and after he'd killed the ones in the loft he went to court and was fined under the Wildlife And Countryside Act. £5000 a bat! A £25 survey fee isn't that expensive then is it?
