lurchergrrl 1,441
Get one of those exercise balls, and follow the instructions that come with. Even sitting on it - properly - for any length of time, you'll feel it working. You won't strain your back doing crunches on it, and it does the job quicker than regular crunches. Have to dust mine off and get the exercise dvd out ... got a bet on with the OH

droid 11
Thing with ab exercises is, you've got to do them regularly. I do 125 inclined situps every time I go to the gym (about 5 times a week) and at first they killed my back. But after a couple of weeks the pain went. Your back gets used to it. Try to persist. I do my situps in sets of 25. Try that rather than just banging out a shedload all at once.

So it could be normal that it hurts the bottom of my back then untill i get used to doing them

sandymere 8,263
Try the plank, side plank, superman etc (Google for details) variety will work more of the muscles rather than just a few. You can't isolate weight loss so doing sit ups etc will strengthen abdo muscle but not make a tummy smaller. Swimming running etc are better as they will tone the whole body and reduce weight so the toned muscles can be seen. Edited March 23, 2009 by sandymere
gnasher16 30,557
The thing most people dont realise is a good set of visible abs is more about diet than exercise....a lot of people have a good set through normal day to day activity they just dont know it because its covered up by a layer of fat.....ive lifted weights for many years and in the off season they are not visible however with a competition round the corner and a diet adjustment....out they come. Crunches would be the best bet but if you have back trouble then probably best dealing with that before taking up any strenous exercise.
