Guest vin
I went out with an old friend last night and did some drive-by scanning about on fields from the van with the big blaster lamp...and there was bugger all rabbits in all the places that used to be over-run with them..we did a round trip of 140 miles from nr sheffield to the river trent near dunham bridge toll bridge..we even walked off the old fields around back of toll bridge..there was nothing....we used to go there and when you put the lamp on there was that many rabbits it looked like blackpool illuminations ! the dogs used to miss that many because they were jumping up all over the place it was like a comedy. well now there was nothing..no where around iether..we went all over up loads of back-lanes and looked on loads of fields.. what we noticed was there seemed to be pockets of bunnies every few miles or so,you would get a few..then nothing again.they seem very sparce on the ground..Except for all the places like roadside grass verges where you cant get at em,and truck stops etc etc ..but out in farmer Gile,s fields...not a bloody lot... I have as some of you may know, rescued a little beddyX and im just trying to get it tuned in on the lamp, but what i need for it i cant bloody find (bunnies) .. i need to go somewhere where there is an epidemic of bunnies just to get the dog off to a decent start. So my last question is... Does anyone know where to go within a reasonable distance to sheffield that is over-run with bunnies ? Preferably with permission..but i also dont mind a bit of ducking and diving..lol....bearing in mind i am 42 not a youngster,so im not as nimble as i used to be. Im not asking for any favours or even an invite out with anyone just a pointer in a deffo direction would be a great help lads. regards vin Quote Link to post

lancer 13
Think everybody agree's there a real shortage of rabbits just now mate rabbiting should stop at the end of febuary, gives them a chance for breeding a few more before the season starts again in september, but these days everyone with a lurcher or gun seems to be a summertime pest controller f**k knows what they do in the winter, even this lamping competition being run in march sets a bad example and that is just so someone can say my dog is better than yours,so with this type of behavier from grown men things are looking a bit grim for the rabbit population. I agree with the seasonal rules..but not one of my mates does..they all go all year round nowadays with a short break around now for the Mad march hares etc etc. many many years ago, rabbits did breed in early spring/summer etc etc..but nowadays they are breeding in most parts of the country all year round..my mate has been going to the same permission now for the last 25 years at least 2-3 times per week doing all manner of pest control etc etc..he says that over the last few years there seems to be no season for rabbits...there was young chppers running about in all that snow we had not long back this year..he says that while the "good old boys" stay at home resting.... everyone else is out there getting the job done...if the farmer wants them shifting..thats what he does...end of. As i have already said...i am just trying to get my little rescue dog pointed in the right direction on the lamp....she,s fine in the daytime"great little marker upper". but she needs a few nights on the lamp just to get tuned in... its a long wait til September.. I want to know now, where the dog stands and how much work i have got to put in to get her up to scratch.. cheers vin Quote Link to post
lancer 13
well with the so called dog lads nowadays its allways an excuse to say i chase rabbits all summer to get the pup going, but most of them have a pup every summer due to failing with the dogs or selling them for proffit, and with loads of people thinking the next ready made lurcher they buy is going to be the best in the world things are looking grim for the rabbit. mick328 0
Hardly any rabbits round here near bridlington but more hares than you could shoot. think it might be time to get a long dog and break some rules. Quote Link to post

One of my old mates said he knew what the answer is...... he says that its all the bloody Imigrants coming over here and going out shooting them for the pot..same going on in all the big Carp lakes etc etc...he says they eat owt that moves..... and fear no-one.. so with all this going on...i dont think the odd midnight mooch with my little mutt is gonna destroy the countries rabbit population.. i am a man who takes what he needs and no-more...i didnt buy a ready made dog...its was a dead dog walking..so im just giving it a new lease of life and something to focus on..im no muppet... and have had and done plenty in my time, and i,ve never been away from the game in some form or other...when ive done with this little dog it will be a pleasure to see and work with... time and effort will prove me correct. so call it as you like matey sat there on yer high horse... what other people do is up to them, leave em to it. vin Quote Link to post
