Ive had a problem with my security light for while so i took it down today and used the PIR censor off it ( which works ) on another light , which had a dodgy PIR , ( the other light kept gettin water in it ) . Anyway , i changed the PIR no problem sorted the light so it was all in one piece and tested it . Now you will have to bear with me while i explain . From the light unit there are 3 wires , 2 with a cotton type sheid around them , and a green/yellow one . From the PIR unit there are 2 , a red and a blue . Now i tested it by putting a 2core flex with a plug on to the connection block .

So a white/cotton from the light with red from PIR To red on the flex with plug on .

Other white/cotton from the light with the blue from PIR To blue on the flex with plug on .

Yellow/green connected to nothing .

Plugged it in and it was fine , adjusted the censor , it worked a treat .

So outside ive got

1 wire , with a red , black and a small bare copper wire inside .

So i figure that if i wire the wires the same on the outside as i did on the plug it will work , how bloody wrong you can be !!

Ive had every configuration you can think of and although the light does work , no problem , the censor does not work . So ive either got it wired wrong , or ive blown something on the PIR by wiring it wrong . Any ideas ???

The yellow and green cable Is the one that should definately be connected to something  Sounds like It's been bodged bigtime and If you don't know what your doing get a spark In as left as Is It could cause someone serious damage or at worse death!

Even running the light with no earth Is asking for trouble no matter what amount of time. No doubt you've been playing with It too while the powers still on, Even unintentially, I know I have made mistakes before now but leave be and get someone In who knows what there doing or you may not have the chance to regret trying to sort It youself.

I havent been messin with it while its been on , i aint that stupid ! It`ll trip out if somethings amiss with it anyway . Its just buggin the life out of me .

Deppens what type of protective device Is on It...... That earth wire should definately be connected to something though.

Ye i kinda thought that , but why would it work on the 2 core flex with no earth ?

Could be anything. Are you tripping out, loose connection, wrong pollarity? What set up are you using exactly. From the t&e wire Is the feed coming straight from a plug? Checked the fuse In It?

Could be anything and without proper test equipment I'm glad It's not my problem. Alternitavely, Do the safe route adn as PP suggests just get a new PIR light. No need to get the 1/2 mile spot light 1KW ones If you only want It for outside the garage etc. Problem solved then and you should come out In 1 piece :D

Your yellow/green wire should be connected to the body of the lamp.

Polarity on most PIR's is'nt usually a prob, nor tthe lamp itself.

Wet your fingers and hold the ends of the feed cable you are using, see if you've got power to it.

(Alternativly use a multimeter).

Sounds to me like youve lost the supply to the lamps location

Assuming youve checked fuse/trips,Did you wire it in yourself?,If not there might be a lightswitch size box nearby with a fuse holder and blown fuse.

Track the wiring all the way back to make sure.

If youve got power to the lamp then chuck it in the bin and buy a new one. They aren't that expensive.

And bear in mind a cobbled up lamp setup could start a fire before the fuse/trip goes.

:clapper::clapper::clapper: Are you for f**king real ????

Take no notice to this idiot and go and get yourself a new light, for the sake of £8.00 I wouldnt be arsed f*****g about.

You'll be pissing in the wind trying to rewire the light as the colour of cables in these cheap lights can vary, and make sure you connect the earth (green and yellow) its the most important cable in any circuit, 2 core cable is a no no for this reason.
