Freddie The Ferret In His New Hutch

Recommended Posts

Hi I have just made a new ferret hutch and moved my hob into it he's gone from a 1 level to a 2 level hutch which is really big. Now at fist I had a tube going from the bottom level tot he top but he didn't like it so I swapped it for a sloping peace of wood and now he can get up and down easily.

Instead of putting woodcarvings down or sawdust I have put a cat litter tray in. I have see some people do this so I thought ill have ago looks much easier than cleaning out the hole hutch. So just went to check on him but he wont shit or piss on the tray he will go somewhere ells but not the tray. Should I give him time or is there anything that I can persuade him to go in the tray to shit. At the moment i only have woodcarvings in the tray but i do have some cat litter somewhere should I use that?

When I'm trying to encourage new ferrets to use the litter tray, I pick up (using a plastic bag!) the poo they've done out of the tray and drop it in the tray, then clean where they had originally done it! This way when they walk in the litter tray they'll smell their poo and hopefully think "Oh, that's my poo......this must be where I do my toilet business"........well that's the theory anyway!

My girls use just 1 litter tray in their indoor cage, they're very good and go to the bottom level of their cage every time to do their business! However, when 3 of them were in the outdoor hutch they had 3 litter trays in the run.......sometimes they'd use one of them, and other times they'd just go where the hell they liked! The little buggers! All 5 will be going in the outdoor hutch come summer, so I'm just hoping they'll carry on using just one litter tray! Fingers crossed anyway!

Good luck to you!
