Think I'm with PJ on this one. This is a good example of yet another breed that should have been left alone to do what it's been doing for all these years, and NOT introduced to an urban environment with a tag line attached: ie 'effective gaurd dog, little training required, better than a .45 calibre bullet ...' f**king shocking  I nearly fainted when they waved that baby in front of the dog .... so stupid. Nobody but the MOST experienced people should ever have one of these, and certainly not in highly populated areas.

They HAVE to be trained right, and in the right home ... similar to the Turkish Akbash, Anatolian Shepherds and other Livestock Guard Dogs. I don't think that fat dog in the video could catch anything after trying to run for 20 yards, it looked knackered just pulling on the lead! We live rural and have goats, chickens, ducks, geese and a "guard" turkey (if you have never been chased by a pissed off tom, you would never understand how scary they can be when they are running!) :o along with the dogs and coon and have coyotes sounding around us nightly, coon, feral cats, wild dogs etc, so we have animals and a home to protect. We are a few miles outside of our small town with only a couple of neighbors, one who was robbed during the day last summer. Kye is very paranoid about dog thieves too. We are away from everything enough that things could happen here without anyone knowing until it was too late, no one would hear me or Kye :clapper: scream for help, and I sure don't run around doing yardwork with a gun on hand! After I listed to "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote on CD last year I decided we needed a dog that could be left out as a visual deterrant, but also one who could actually DO something to back down an unwanted visitor. Kye works nights so I am on my own a lot which is the main reason we got ours, as a true yard dog to protect the home and us. But I think that Caucasians are more naturally agressive and more popular than what we have, which is fine by me.

In your situation I fully agree, having a dog on duty is a good idea.

But that skinny little bloke in his tiny house in a populated urban area does not need a 185lb beast on a lead to protect him. What he needs is mama's home cooking, a set of weights and a well trained dobe, maybe

a chihuahua is more than enough for him!

This time of year when there are no leaves on the trees and all of the crops are down you can see a car or lights coming a mile away. But when the corn is up all around the property and you can't see anything until it is right on you, and easy to hide in the corn, it is a bit creepy when you are on your own ... images of "Childen of the Corn" come to mind!

At the end of the day a pesistent thief will shoot the dog or posion it and come back the best way to protect your belongings is not to have them on display, that goes for dogs too.

Spot on, if you really need a guard dog that bad, get a good GSD or DS, easy to handle and a good brain on them.

The bitch we have is a South East Asian Ovcharka,...the very reason we didnt get a Malinois, Rottie or Shepard, is because i didnt want to have to train it, and its going to be a yard dog...NOT used for attacking people, finding bombs and drugs!...i have neither the skill, ability, time or motivation to want to train a dog of this type...i ahve running dogs and terriers, that is enough...i train alot, and when im not doing that, im working...

This type of dog will just lay there, on the porch...it wont kill stock when it gets bored, or bite the kids when they stay in the summer, because its bored...they just lay there,...they look like there asleep.

If someone, or something is a threat, they will sound off...followed shortly buy an attack...our bitch is 11 weeks, and i havent weighed her since she was nine weeks...at nine weeks she was 16lbs...im guessing she is around the 20+lbs mark now...

She has a little kennel in the yard, and she sleeps in that...when we are home, she will lay on the couch, or on the bed...she gets up every now and then, but thats it!..lol...very laid back, and maybe the BEST temperament of any dog ive ever owned...

So we have a NATURAL guard dog, that will guard us, the property, livestock and other dogs,...they can take exstremes in heat and cold, and need little to no food...plus, there is no need to spend hours a day, having to make sure she stays "Mentaly active" so that she wont go crazy and start biting everyone, or everything...

Will she attack an intruder...i sure as hell hope so,...she dosnt need to do much...just enough top slow 'em down.

Kye,..."An Englishmans home, is HIS castle!"...
