If it were made manditory that would mean that there would be thousands of pounds of lost revenue for the estates because all of the stalkers from other countries who come here every year would have to qualify before the could legaly shoot our deer

No, he has to work under the parameters of the law surely.......IF DSC is not a legal stipulation then it's not a legal stipulation.

I'm not convinced a DSC is of any great relevance!!   I suggest a shooting test (accuracy) and safety knowledge should be explored!!   Many people have a .243 or bigger and quite legitimately take

The problem i have with DSC1 and the whole FAC thing is that there are a lot of us that have many years of experience with firearms and shotguns have been forced to take this qualification . When i d

sure most of them are deemed competent by the tests they have take in there own country.

anyone could still stalk here with a dsc2 cert holder.

Unfortunately" WE". all live in a compensation culture society.

Every time something goes wrong ,Its hands up in the air and shouting for heads to roll and expecting some-one to pay for it .

Of course the Police and powers at be would like everyone to have a certificate! They could then say "We have done our bit and checked him out !Not our fault ".

The buck stops here attitude, means that if you had an accident and F^^k up,Your on your OWN !

It also means that if your accident doesnt comply with best practise standards ,your insurance could well be void !!

This is not just for stalking though !

Anything that has an insurance attached to it is the same .

"Bald tyre " insurance void

"drunk on holiday break your leg ! insurance void

ETC

ETC

Every time there is an accident with a gun. Its going to get front page attention !

If 60 people in France were killed ,its because 60 people (them or others )did something they shouldnt have done .

The certificate wont stop accidents ! But it means that someone will say " YOU should have known better " .

you seem to be missing the point mate 'if it were made manditory' surely if the older keepers with the old style stalking certs and years of experience stalking in this country are having to sit these dsc certs to keep thier jobs then anyone coming into this country to shoot deer should have to have them and simply being acompanied by someone with a dsc 2 would not be acceptable, i for one would not be very happy if i had to pay these totally extravagant fees for a certifacate for the privalage of doing what i have done free for 9 years, to watch other people from other countries swan in without the certificate and shoot deer purely to raise revenue, the argument as far as i am aware is for a qualification that makes sure everyone who shoots deer in this country is trained to the same standard and that everyone carries the same qualification ,different countries have different standards of training you only have to take driving as an example,it seems that the people who thought that they would benifit financially from this have shot themself in the foot :icon_redface: sorry but you cant have yer cake and eat it :D

The problem i have with DSC1 and the whole FAC thing is that there are a lot of us that have many years of experience with firearms and shotguns have been forced to take this qualification .

When i did mine 4 years ago one chap on the course had never been shooting did not have a FAC but could now call himself a stalker and be let loose with a centre-fire rifle which he has no realistic idea of what it is capable of. In my humble opinion yes it is a useful course but as has been said there is no substitute for experience.

700+ views and only 51 votes :icon_redface: its time to stand up and be counted lads help to build up the bigger picture to let the powers that be see what we the working class stalkers think of these qualification and help to keep stalking within our reach so that we are not simply priced out by fees for un-necessary qualification certificates.

hi all,

having just passed my DSC1 today, i am obviously very happy...

one thing i know for sure, i know a hell of a lot more about species recognition, food safety and good practice than i did before. I have been on a few stalks with others and shot a CWD myself, but I really do feel now that i know more, it has built my confidence and i hope my knowledge, and i cant argue with the benefit of that.

I would hope that because of the course i will now be a better stalker - even if i stop myself making one mistake, taking one bad shot, or even just process a deer better for my own food, it will have been worth it.

I know experience with professional stalkers is great learning, but put the two together and i think i will get more enjoyment out of the sport.

to be honest when i went on my first stalk a few months ago i felt out of my depth - now i know the reasons why so many things did or didn't happen, i think i will get more value and enjoyment out of all my future stalks - that has to be worth the effort.

basc may be fighting this but how hard.

Scotland it just the start, the whole of the uk will have to fall in to line with this.

E U rules that come in to force 2010.

lamping is next on the chopping block, unless of course you have the right qualifications.

rumour has it with out these qualifications the police will take a vast amount of guns out of shooters hands.

with no hope of compensation.

wow! i have just been reading up on all the proposed changes - i hadnt followed this before i did the course, but i guess i am now glad i have done the course - i did actually enjoy it.

How will they deal with the old school stalker? the guy who has 40 years of shooting under his belt, who goes to scotland twice a year, but has no intention of starting a load of exams late in life - what a massive loss to the Scottish economy those people would be - they spend thousands.

I dont have a problem with making sure poeple are safe (myself included, which is why i didnt mind doing the course), but if it gets to the point where anyone who shoots anything virtually has to have a police escort, that would be sad, and also a lot of legislation to deal with a problem that as far as i can tell doesnt really exist.

There may be a couple of business opportunities here - Maybe we should get together and set up the RSC (Rabbit Shooting Certificate - parts 1 and 2 of course) before someone else does, or if the problem is the Scottish Parliament, maybe someone would like to come up with a novel way to persuade all the Scottish Red Deer to move to England or Wales...

i think it is more important for recreatinal stalkers to do this cause, especial if they dont do it all that often, i think it would help them to learn a bit about stalking before they go.

Doing any course is an advantage, you always learn something, if not from the course, then from other students.

If you are the solitary type, then it does good to mix with others now and again.

Disease ID is probably the most important.

As for having the qualification. There are lots of people who are highly qualified in certain fields. it just means they can pass exams.

"Qualifications will help you get a job, but they won't help you keep it." That's where BullSh*t come in.

some good points made there but you have to think outside the box

im a pro have nothing to do with dsc1 though i have dsc2 accredited witness status.

theese points are only made through my experience.

Firstly a mentor is the best way but not everybody has that luxury and how good are they??

secondly its all common sense, I have had people arrive with wrong ammo for rifle, guns brand new and not even fired never mind zeroed people who think 55g ammo is less powerful then 100g because they think thats the ammont of powder inside.

no idea of notifiable diseases or what to do in event of finding one.

not everybody needs to know if the go out with a mentor or pro but think how many dont.

a gun not zeroed could be 8ft off target now if it were 8ft high is a safe shot still safe.

A form of mandatory tests and general gun care would stamp the vast majourity of this out.

We have to police our sport and all of the above people once they have been shown have made good stalkers.

Imagine the other side if they had gone into the field and come a cropper> more guideline rules laws restrictions for everybody.

want a car you need a lisence to get one you pay whats the difference if your serious about your sport take a test and prove it only an idiot could not learn something through doing it.

Would have thought IF things where that bad an accident would have happened before now,

and any of the dsc courses will not make anyone into a good shot.( just how many times in a day can you do the shooting test)

but you want it as you will be getting good money from them that Have to do it.

Its been said above this is for the some folk to make more money, its got nothing to do with the deer.

how much is a driving test by the way, does it stop accidents and fools killing or inuring others.

people have been stalking and shooting deer for lots of years with very few accidents ,

all the dsc 1 or 2 does is give some folk an excuse just to take out the trophy ones, thats why there are so many of the things about.
