Guest vin
hello all Anyone have any slip lead designs from old days..The only ones i seem to be able to find are straps that thread through collar and let go etc etc..or the old metal catch type things bit like scissor type clip, they are clunky and noisy also. Is there any other types to buy nowadays ? i used to have one with a brass type barrel with a pin on spring inside centre of barrel and all that was attached to lead and collar..slipped dog in total silence and retained collar...(i could draw a diagram, but it would look like kids drawing) ive seen similar types with square clips made of metal etc etc... anyone know what im talking about..? or where to get one of these type of leads ? thanks all vin Edited March 19, 2009 by vin Quote Link to post
nrat 8
you would be very lucky to find a brass one with the pin most the catchs are pressed steel now,jim Quote Link to post
Guest jt750
I think the one with the spring that retains the collar is called a toggle slip. you put your hand thro the leather loop and hold the toggle attach the colllar to the dog. When you want to slip your dog (and he/she's on the end of the lead rady to go) you release the toggle and the pressure of the dog pulling to be away releases the bolt mechanism which holds the collar in place. I got one of these when my dog got his collar caught in a smallish branch (still attached to a tree i might add) whilst in full flight up a hedge after a bunny and it whipped him round and floored him.i thought he broke his neck. I never run a dog with a collar again after that toggle slip Quote Link to post

stevolad 26
Ive had a couple of toggle slips, still got one in the shed actually but prefer the Strong Stuff slip now for ease of use. Had dogs just pull out of the toggle slips when watching another dog run which just spoils things Quote Link to post
Guest reload
I have a single slip, I used to use for coursing, all hand made leather work, with a brass barrel and pin and engineered.... It was bought of a old fella at the New forest show fair few years ago....he was from nottingham if I remember rightly. The cheap press button ones are a bag of shite and awkward to use. But for lamping its a gundog slip or a piece of rope, but i prefer a dog to work free of a slip how a lurcher should do IMO. Edited March 20, 2009 by reload Quote Link to post

Had dogs just pull out of the toggle slips when watching another dog run which just spoils things I had one that didnt do that...but i never had one o them big bull X pulling mi arm off. i had one of them old brass types and also one made of metal with velcro type straps it was fully adjustable and strong enough to hold any dog with the toggle in hand and wire chord running through to the pin in the release barrel.. i cant be doing with old bits of string and rope... and theres no way im running any dog with the collar on...learned that one many years ago. does anyone know of the guy in Nottingham who makes the old style toggle slips ? PS ..thanks for the replies lads......sorry............. and lasses. vin Quote Link to post
ulverston moocher 60
I use either a piece of car seat belt cut thiner and to length(works well with bieng flat doesnt tend to snag) or bit of blue rope with the ends singed with a lighter. Quote Link to post

Guest vin
there you go vin knew id got one somewhere, NICE ONE...that looks like one of the copies of the original design...a bit more hand made, and the barrel looks bigger than the one im talking about...one of my old mates said it was a "waterloo cup slip toggle." who knows but were definately on the right lines here...if your not using it..gerrit stripped down so we can have a look at how it works and maybe get someone to make us a few new ones. cheers YOUTH. vin Quote Link to post
RustyG 0
Aye i just use a bit of rope i use an old bit of thin climbing rope with an eye spliced in one end with a little carabina thru it, that way i can make it into a 'legitimate dog walker lead' if the need arises lol Quote Link to post
