Shot size for pigeons?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I normally use 32g, 6's for pigeons, but I was told recently than no7s will produce cleaner kills on pigeons and therefore less runners. Apparently Archie Coats even switched to no 7s later in life becasue he belived they gave better results.

More shot in the pattern but less penetration? What do you guys use?

Hello by the way :)

There is a thread on the first page asking 5's or 6's for pigeon? This is up to 55 replies now, why not have a read. Regarding 7's, some people do use them, but personally I use nothing smaller than 6's. Remember, depending on the country of origin, shot sizes can be less than the English ones. You could be unknowingly using 8's or something.

think he wants someone with personal experience of pigeon shooting. not meaning any offence but your post wont have helped him in the slightest.

ive tried no6 for pigeon shooting with a mates shotgun and the difference in comparison with my 20g and cheapo 23g shot was incredible. no personal experience of no7 shot so i cant help but no6 certainly improved my shooting.

only real way you will know is to try some yourself so why not buy 25 or 50 of both and compare the two.

I tend to use whatever i've got at the time. I've used 24g No.7 steel shot up to 36g BB shot equally well. If anything, take a selection with you. If the birds are coming in low, use a smaller shot, and the converse for higher birds.

Only problem with BB shot is that they have huge gaps in the pattern even with full choke.

A number 5 or 6 32 gram load is good for most circumstances though.

I think I'lll just stick wit the no.6's. I've shot hundereds of pigeons using them and not had many runners. I was just wondering if anyone used no.7's and what results they had.

Cheers lads

7's are all I ever use for anything feathered I shoot at now. I do shoot the odd box of 6's or perhaps 5's, but I have 6500 No.7's left to be fired ;)

I find they produce fine kills, I use Trap cartridges, 28gr No.7 with a superb pattern and fast velocity, more than enough penetration

I'll have to try it then. What range are they good for?

Thanks

Bearing in mind that I'm using a fast cartridge with 7% Antimony content, I am comfortable taking a bird at 40 yards. Over that sometimes seen as I shoot them through a Half choked Trap gun.

I have some Eley VIP FITASC 28gr No.7 here that I have killed at silly ranges with on a second barrel shot
