Mr_Logic 5
Right then... Looking to get a rifle for long range target work. One day I might like to shoot F/TR - the appeal of everyone using one calibre is a good thing for me. So, that means 308, even though it's going out to 1000 yards. I was going to get a Savage F/TR, at 1100 they were just about affordable and hideously accurate. Sadly, they're all gone at that price now, the new ones are £1600-1700, which is OTT unless I get to do this a hell of a lot. So, next step down the tree... What to get?! Choices thus far: Remington 700 VLS (or the straight Varmint with the nasty plastic stock) (650 new) Ruger M77 Mk2 VT (675 s/h) CZ 550 Varmint Kevlar (875 new) As far as I can tell, the CZ will likely shoot the best out of the box, or maybe even the Ruger (good things said about the VT, unlike the rest of that model range). The Remington will likely shoot well but has the benefit of allowing future customisations, as well as being the cheapest. So I'm leaning in the Remington direction, especially since my little 223 is hideously accurate and it is factory standard. What do you think folks? Don't want to spend silly money particularly, it's my third rifle in as many weeks... Quote Link to post
lgray88 4
why not just go for a custom job on the remington straight away, surely if you can aford to spend 1100 on the savage F/TR , you could spend a bit extra on a standard remmy 700 too bring it up to the spec you want. as for the ruger i cant fault that at all my friend has m77 mkII in .223 and its shooting excellent groups at 100yards with factory ammo. liam Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
I couldn't really afford the Savage But I'd rather pay a bit in credit card interest than £700 just because some berk screwed up the economy! Quote Link to post
provarmint 25
Try Stuart Anselm, Osprey Rifles. Good guy. Savage f/tr, £1175 on website Call: 0161 408 3555 stuart@ospreyrifles.com Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
Tried him, he has sold all of the F/TR at that price :-( I shall likely get something as cheap as possible for now, give the long range target shooting a good go, and either upgrade this rifle or get a custom one made. Lot to learn first though. Quote Link to post

Mr_Logic 5
They were £1750, that was pre-price rise, so if I had to guess I'd say £2250 by now. Quote Link to post
