Guest SJM
Has anyone had a dewclaw removed from an adult lurcher, how much did it cost and was the dog put under a full anasthetic or just given a local type jab in its leg? Cheers in advance

TIMMAY 6
my old terrier cross (pet) had his dewclaws removed, when he was about 8 , because they kept splitting and causing him problems, he was given a general anaesthetic, not sure on the price cause he was put under anaesthetic for other reasons, but i think the bill showed £50 quid for the dewclaw removal (2), so would probably be that plus the cost of anaesthetics. This was about 8 yrs ago aswell.

Cheers in advance I had it done on a dog ,too many years ago to remember the price,it was a full anaesthetic.Something to think about, if you work a lot of rough ground ,you might want to think about having the other one off at the same time Sarah.I take the damn things off soon after their born now .I dont see the use of them but others think they aid balance etc.I cant see it. Guest SJM
He only has the one Inan, its obviously been a botched job as a whelp and its grown back at a funny angle, the claw sticks out and as hes a fast type I forsee it causing problems in the future. Im thinking best to just have it taken off rather than wait til he injures it.
hairyface 211
may 2008 i had my 5yr old lurcher done, dropped him off at vets at 9am, picked him up at 3pm and was charged, wait for it..........£38, to be honest i was expecting about £60+ so it was a nice surprize,am sure there was a lad on here at weekend quoting £140 each dewclaw

She kept catching it, one time she came back from a run and it was hanging from a thread. We'd been advised not to have it taken off when she was an adult, but realised it had to come off. This will be about 4 or 5 years ago, cost us about £120 we seem to remember, and was done under a general anaesthetic. We wished we'd have had it done sooner with her to be honest! shell

Guest SJM
Cheers for all the feedback folks Im going to ring the vets in the morning and see what they quote me for having it done, its probably the wisest choice as I intend to give this young dog some real stick over the coming season and the last thing I want is him going lame all the time cos of a daft dewclaw. The thing that was worrying me was a full anasthetic as I know some dogs can take a reaction to it, I guess its a case of weighing up whether prevention is better than cure
TOMO 26,798
dont be afraid to ring round difrent vets for a price, i have done this a few times, in fact my dogs are regisered at 3 vets . very often the greyhound vet is the cheapest
