Hello all,

Inspired by all of the fantastic scenery and wildlife shots taken by the users on this forum. I would like to take a few of my own, I have always enjoyed taking pictures but only with a point and shoot jobbie.

I need some advice on what equipment I would need to take better quality pics. I'm thinking digital SLR with a 70 - 300mm lens judging by what I have read on here and other places.

But what would people recommend as the best camera / lens for the money, as I am on rather a tight budget.

Thanks for any help

I use a Nikon D40 which is a entry level camera, you can pick them up for just over £200 and a Tamron 70-300 lens which was £69. Its only 6 mega pixels but for what I use it for its great and well worth a look.......................................

If you're on a really tight budget buying secondhand may be an option. Most of the cheaper DSLRs are very good - they all have much the same features these days. I'd suggest visiting a camera shop to try a few out.

A 70-300 lens is ideal for wildlife, but for landscape shots you really need something with a wider angle of view, a zoom starting around 18mm is good, and you'll find that a lot of dslr kits include a wide zoom lens.

Hi Magwitch,

I was having a look today in Jessops and the D40 did catch my eye, it obviously takes a good picture if that's what you use for the pic's accompanying your ferreting posts!! :clapper:

THey did also have the Tamrom lens for half price if bouhght at the same time as the camera but from memory that was still £129, so £69 was a steal.

Thanks for your help anyway.

I also saw the Sony Alpha 200 for a bit more money but that is 10 mega pixels and wondered if anyone had any thoughts / or used that particular model

Hi All,

Thanks for the help with this one, it was between the Sony and the Nikon D40, after looking at both and taking into account Magwitch's advice (and the quality of his pic's) I went for the Nikon.

I managed to get it from Jessop's with the Tamron 70-300mm lens and a 2gb SD card for £339, which I thought was quite a good deal! (Someone will no doubt have a better offer somewhere now I have said that!)

Just need to find the time to get it out now!!

Thanks again for the help

Good choice matie..pixel numbers arent everything..I went to a talk in on Thursday by a very high ranking photographer in the North east of England, he showed us pictures that were taken by his 1mega pixel camera years ago, they were some of the sharpest pictures Ive ever seen..Pixel size comes into it, the bigger the pixel the more light it abosrbs, so better picture with less noise..thats why you can get camera phones now up to 8mega pixels, but the pictures from them will never match those produced by an 8mega pixel dslr..the sensor they use is much smaller. The same bloke showed us photographs taken using his Nikon D700, some up to 6400 + iso, with no noise..On some pics he had even put in noise in photoshop to get a desired affect..amazing. All Nikon film cameras, and most of their early dslr`s suffered noise problems, but thats not the case now..

Look forward to see-ing some of your pics matie..the link to Ken Rockwells site that Magwitch gave you is excellent reference, but watch out if you use his settings, especially the ones he gives for colour..he loves vivid highly saturated colour, ok for some things, but they didnt work for me with wildlife pics.
