I'd recommend the Lowa Combat GTX boot - http://www.qmstores.co.uk/gbu0-prodshow/LW-CBGTX.html

You can probably find cheaper than that if you shop around .

Lowa boots are made on a slightly wider last than Meindl's so it gives you the option of wearing a thicker sock in your usual size .

I think I'm correct in saying these are the boots the armed forces mainly use these days , a good recommendation I'd say ;)

Have you had much experience with different types of boots? :big_boss: ................

These are meant to be very good boots, there was a thread sometime ago about them, better to import from the states though, does anyone know how to do this, (best way cheapest way.)

There great boots mine are well into there third year and there as good as new, thats 3 seasons ferreting, lamping, beating and walking the dogs. Just keep them clean and use chelsea leather food on them. I bought mine off ebay (america), 'Pats boot barn' i think

Altbergs overated...Dont really match to a lowa after a while..thinsoled and rub in a big way £125 plus

German Para boots...Mega comfy , really unfashionable cost around £40 surplus but worth it not good for running in

Lowas..Various guises..Usually use gtx models..Cost around £130 plus...good quality, reliable, personal favourites

Uk Issue...Good for the price,,,check the tread depth for quality

Jungle boots..Not worth a wank..No use for digging as no ankle suport but really light and good for running ...

I've been wearing Brasher Supalites for the last eight years and have always been really pleased with them apart from a few points.

1) The grip isn't too good.

2) Although they are "super light" they achieve this by having very light-weight soles which wear out quickly: mine normally only last between one and two years.

On the plus side they are unbelievably comfortable and extremely light for a leather boot, in fact lighter than most fabric boots at 1122g per pair of size 9s! :icon_eek:

I have to admit that I don't do an awful lot of digging as I don't keep terriers and I'm a "wait and see" type with the ferrets but I keep my old knackered out pairs for gardening and they handle the digging in my thick clay pretty well: not the same as a 10' dig through shale, rock and tree roots to a patterdale though!

Following advice on a thread on this site last year or the year before I bought a pair of Meindl Douvre Extremes and although very hard wearing and with much better grip than my Supalites and equally as water-proof they're very heavy in comparison at around an extra 800g per pair. Sorry for the metric measurements but the sites I looked them up on didn't have imperial. :icon_redface:

One final thought; as I have kelpies, and the little sods love being out in the midday sun, I've had to change my habits of only going out early morning or late evening in the Summer to all day long in order to give them enough exercise (as well as exercising the rabbits and squirrels too :whistling: ). As a result of this I've discovered Keen sandals which I find extremely comfortable. This is partly due to the wide toe which is protected by a wrap-around toe bumper. The reason I'm mentioning this is that I find a lot of hiking boots don't fit my British foot which is wider. Keen also make hiking boots which I've read good reports on, including reviews by American hunters and reviews of walking in 3' of snow as well as the cactus strewn Arizona desert.

Ironically, having written all this waffle (congratulations if you're still with me  ) I've recently won an online competition after filling in a questionnaire and the prize was a pair of Brasher boots of my choice.

couldnt agree more , had 2 pairs and realy give them some hammer . they are comfy, warm , hard wearing , waterproof and much cheaper than any other boot in this class , ran a pair of these alongside a pair of le chameaus mouflons that my hunting partner bought at the same time and the chams are cold and leaking half way through the season , my elks are still going strong two seasons in and i havnt touched the new pair i bought in to replace these yet !! highly reccommended.

bought from america via ebay for around £120 , be aware that there are fakes out there if they are any cheaper than a ton be wary.
