First Full Days Shooting

Recommended Posts

I have trained Gundogs before (Lab & GWP) But have been into Lurchers and Terriers for the last few years.

Anyway i got Fudge the Cocker x 6 months ago, she is 15months old now and i have only been using her for bushing (which she does very well) with my other dogs.

So i decide to get back into shooting, so 4 weeks ago i start doing some gundog training with her, now she has always had a good retreiving instinct although that was surpressed by working with the terriers, i also always use a whistle when working my dogs so that was one less thing to worry about.

i was very surprised how well she came on in training considering she didnt know how to sit until 4 weeks ago, so it was planned that Saturday would be her first full days shoot, i must admit she had 2 hours practice shooting a few rabbits Thursday afternoon and i had a nightmare, she was slightly wild and took a while to calm down, so i nearly never took her Saturday.

So anyway i picked up Whippet boy and off we went to some new permision, she walked at heel, was very responsive to the whistle and hunted her little heart out, she retreived 3 out of the 4 rabbits and even found and retreived 2 pigeons after a little encouragement, i was over the moon.

I must admit that i wasnt confident she would take to it after this long running in a pack, i have even had her on rats, i thought i might be getting in a new gundog pup, but i think i will stick to the training her, stopping her on the whistle is a bit of a challenge but we have all sumer to work on that.
