sandymere 8,263
it's a bit early in the year in the uk for many to be preparing for the coming season but as the pups keeping me awake with it's wittering, i'm on nights , so thought i'd put a question up about getting adult dogs fit. i run about 20miles a week, about 8 road and 12 cross country/beach, the dog comes along through the summer which maintains a good base of stamina. i top this up with ball work as we approach autum the short fast runs with shortish recoveries are similar to lamping. then begin with a couple of easy outings on the lamp to sharpen up body and obedience. this is for a bedlington x used mainly for lamping. so how do you get your various crosses ready? Stabs 3
When I had mine really fit I was running 8 miles every other night with them and they'd accompany me on my pesty duties on weekend mornings for about 4-5 hours each time. I found a frisbee a good way to keep them in good nick and it helps with the retrieve training too. I used the flirt pole on the bulls too. I too used to do a bit of swimming wiht them, but one of them has a morbid fear of water so he just watched
Kye 77
Road work, sprints, running out the truck, and swimming...not in any real order, although i do like to get road work done first to start to pull the feat up...just because of our VERY bad terrain!...i think swimming is GREAT on the dogs though...even have my Stags pull me along in the water when im in a Canoe!..lol...they love it! sandymere 8,263
thanks for the replys glad to see i'm not the only loon out there but i feel that it takes so long to get a dog fit that you have to hold some stamina over the summer or your dogs just getting at it's working peak as the springs approaching again. i'd agree with the swimming as a lot of my runs include sections along the beach if its hot they charge in, tried it myself but putting sandy feet back into trainers gives excellent blisters!
