terrierguy 1
Just wondering if many people out there have had much success with taking on lurchers from rescue kennels and transforming them into decent working dogs? Regards Ian Quote Link to post
Hollie 21
When i left home i got my 1st Lurcher from the Dogs Trust, he had been kept in a flat, had NO muscle on him and was knackered after a 1/2 hour walk, I got him fit and he looked like a different dog, he caught many hares in daylight, i am no hardcore hunter, especially compared to some of you guys on here but in my eyes a dog that can course well and catch a few hares is a good dog I will try and find some photos of him BEFORE he got fit. Lola 0
I think it's a great idea to get yourself a working dog from a rescue although be prepared for tough times. I wasn't prepared but working on it now. It's a shame when lurchers get rehomed and aren't allowed to chase bunnies. Mine has had a couple since I've had him and he's only around 12 months. Just don't mention about working them to the rescue, they don't seem keen. Quote Link to post

Just don't mention about working them to the rescue, they don't seem keen. When i got Ben from the Dogs Trust i told them i had grown up with working Lurchers and i also took him back to visit the staff and told them he had caught a few hares, they were really pleased and impressed that he was in a home that allowed him to behave like a Lurcher. I went to a small local rescue and looked at a (obviously) worked Lurcher and they were extremely rude to me asking how i would control 2 lurchers and what would i do if they chased something, i knew then that it was a different ball game to where i had got Ben! buffalo 2
My uncle got a lovely looking lurcher from a rescue centre a few years ago, apparentley came off a "travellers" site.Made one hell of a working dog, only problem was it worked solo, took off for 2-3 days at a time but left something on the doorstep every night, hare, rabbit and one morning when he opened the door a sheep! Strange but never seen the dog again after that incident... Edited March 14, 2009 by buffalo Quote Link to post

simba 1
i took a rescue dog in and rehomed him to a gamekeeper friend turned out to be the best dog he ever had !!! Quote Link to post
bullmastiff 615
Roo was a rescue, they took him to the West country gamefair to see if anyone was interested in him. He already had working marks on his muzzle and a hanging bottom lip, but they didn't seem too upset when I mentioned about him working again. He wasn't house or obedience trained at all but when out he would follow the lamp and release when I hissed him on and seemed to know what he was doing. I think, with an experienced Lurcherman before the ban he could of been a really good dog (now the poor bugger's ended up with me!!!) I couldn't of asked for a better teacher than him and would definately consider getting another rescue. Quote Link to post

terrierguy 1
Some good stories there, I suppose its a gamble at the end of the day taking on a dog from a rescue kennel whether it will turn out to be a good worker, I just dont know whether I could afford to take that chance? Cold Ethyl 63
I took a young massive lurcher who was tagged as a greyhound LMAO out of glasgow cat and dog home years ago.He was an amazing dog very obedient done everything that was asked of him and smart as hell.Would never leave your side etc great with the kids in the neigbourhood and fine with other pets in the house.Having said that it doesnt always work like that i know a few people who have taken rescue dogs and its went wrong Quote Link to post
boothy 0
i think its pretty sad thinking of dogs just in kennels.i feel sorry for the dogs that just dont get the exercise they need its not fair really Quote Link to post
Lola 0
i think its pretty sad thinking of dogs just in kennels.i feel sorry for the dogs that just dont get the exercise they need its not fair really I agree and I think it's why mine has been so much trouble. He'd been on 3 months kennel rest after having broken his leg. The break was operated on and no longer under a vet when they picked him up. I think he was given too much rest and now he's making up for it. It must be hard for the kennel staff to know that they couldn't possibly give the dogs the walks they need though so hats off to em all, keep up the good work. Quote Link to post
