Cant get shots to group

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My first post and i hope someone can help.

last year i bought a secondhand 6.5x55 Mannlicher Professional. Once i got the rifle home i went through the zeoring process and no matter how hard i tried i could not get groups below 5" from 50 yrds. The rifle had been threaded for a mod when i bought it and I was shooting it with a T8 and a Zeiss Scope. I have tried to look at the potential problems that could be limiting the accuracy. I have discounted a bad scope and hopefully the operator (I can shoot tight groups with my.22 at that range) and i am using Norma ammunition.

On closer examination of the threading on the rifle I have noticed that it sits at a very slight angle to the barrel and therefore the mod will also be at a slight angle. When i shoot it there is no evidence of the bullet colliding with the mod but i wonder if this could be the problem why the rifle is not shooting?

If anyone has any ideas then i would be interested to hear them?

thanks

just my 2p's worth but not getting a group below 5" at 50 yards seems like barrel problems. have you had the barrel checked because if the rifle is second hand then that could be the simplest and unfortunately most expensive resolution to the problem.

My Check list :-

1st thing Very good rest !!

Try different Ammo and bullet weight although 5" at 50 yds gets alarm bells ringing .

Flinch ?

Bi-pod pushing stock on to barrel ?

Stock Tight ?

Scope/mounts rings Tight ?

Scope U/S ?

Damaged crown ?

Mod ? but if mod it will have damage for you to see !

Barrel Scrap !!!! :censored:

All the best !!

have you tried shooting a group without the mod ? this will eliminate the mod as being the problem if it still doesnt group. as said above check the barrel is floating by pulling a sheet of paper down between the barrel and stock, it should slide all the way down to the action without gripping try this with the bipod down also ( if you use one ) give this a try mate if there is still no improvement you could get the crown checked for damage and if so get the barrel recrowned at a good gunsmith.i would doubt the barrel is shot out as even the worst should still hold under 5" at 50yds and the 6.5 is not a known barrel burner. did you buy the rifle at a shop ? if the worst happens you can always try and see if they will do anything about it if you can show them how many shots you have put through it with the ammo entries on your ticket.

give everything mentioned a try mate and get back to us

good luck with it.
