Monster mink

Recommended Posts

As well as getting stuck into the rat snaring I'd been on the river and noticed masses of mink mark just upstream from where the EA had placed huge boulders to strengthen the bank.

I dusted off my cage trap and got the river keeper to drive me down to the chosen spot. I had the fat of the rump steak I'd had for supper the night before as bait. I positioned the trap right on the mink motorway. I like to make sure that the mink can see straight through to the other end, to encourage them to enter.

I tied it to branch to make sure it didn't get carried away and baited it with the steak rind. As a side note, there was also lots of otter mark too. It was 2 days before I got lucky.

A monster dog mink with balls like spring onions!

It was nearly the full length of the cage and weighed a good 2lb plus. I rebaited this time with the chicken bones from another meal. One day later, this was the result. A bitch mink, also in fine condition

If you look to the left of the minks head, you'll see some mink droppings as they'd been using this tree as a scenting post.

When I took the bitch mink out of the trap, I noticed that something had tried to dig under the trap. Aha, thought I, I know what's happening. I said to the river keeper, I bet we have one tomorrrow. The day dawned and lo and behold, this monster was waiting to greet us.

Another enormous dog mink. Obviously what had happened was that the bitch I had the previous day was in season and the dog had been trying to get at her.

Unfortunately the river has risen by about 3ft and my trap is underwater, so I'll have to wait a few days before I can get at it again.

If you look closely, you can see the otter mark in the silt, you may make out the mink mark too.

not trying to cause trouble, but can i just ask how you dispatched it ?? cause in the trap its dry and dead its wet . :hmm:

I'm glad your not trying to cause trouble. Rimfired in the cage and then blood washed off everything in the river. Just to clear this one up, I have the utmost respect for any quarry that I hunt, be it rat, rabbit, mink or deer. Now I understand why people are loathe to post on this forum. This was my second post and it will be my last, thanks gentlemen, enjoy your sport.

Don't take offence mate, I'm sure he didn't mean owt by it.

It would be a shame if you didn't post no-more as we could do with a few more people on here who get out and do a bit, instead of sat behind their computer writing about it.
