DEKAW 85
Use hand alot with my dogs(stealth tactics), if i am mooching on land that has got plenty of hedge rows/ditches i am able to direct the terrier where i want her to go and direct the lurchers on either side of the hedge/ditch. Still use voice commands mainly to recall dogs.
undisputed 1,664
Mr Catcher who's a member in here had his lurchers trained to a high standard with hand signals...saw him drop his bitch to the down position from over a field away... and direct his dogs left and right in the field. I had a modicum of success with my old bitch but not to catchers standard.
Lola 0
I realised the importance of hand signals when my old girl went deaf. Wish I taught her from young though. You teach them so much without realising your doing it but her last few years would have been less fraught if she knew the signals well.
Malt 379
I can pretty much direct my JRT via hand signals when I'm out mooching around cover.

Doglost Co-Ordinator 4
Use them quite a bit, the labx knows all of them, The als/grey knows them but doesnt always take any notice. The Sal is still learning but is getting the hang of it. Think it makes it fun for them & you dont always want to call your dog back. All mine comes back to hand signals

maty j 6
Can we maybe get some 'top tips' for training hand signals? Trying to teach my lurcher but I'm not having much success so far. Getting to sit etc Is a piece of piss. Give comand accompanied by the hand signal. I use an open hand for sit. as soon as the dogs arse touches the floor reward with treat. Start weaning out the voice comand and again reward fast as soon as the dog does It. That's all there Is too It.. Changing direction - I started off pritty simpley. When you hit a fork In the path or wanted the dog to go a different way (jump a fence to another field etc) give the dog a different kind of whistle to normal. They will probably just look at you. I would then point to which way I was going but with left or right hand to the corresponding direction. It took a few times to get her to understand but now I can direct her. If I want her to change direction and jump I'll give the whistle and tell her hup at the same time. It takes time and I did this from a pup so I think that helped. She's still nothing like the gundogs can do but It's helped put game In the bag once she fully understood what I ment. As most things, That's only how I did It as I didn't and still don't know If there's a proper way to teach It but It worked well enough for me.
Doglost Co-Ordinator 4
The lab was a doddle- totally food orientated. Took bout half hour to learn to come back from across field, whistle her to look at me- hold hand in air then bring down to my side. Intially used to shout 'look' then 'biscuit' she just associated the whistle with biscuits. 'To me & pat leg gets them close, pointing with left/right arm gets them in direction I want them to go in.. All been done in play with with a biscuit or toys. Once they have hang of it you can cut out the toy/treat.
