That might explain 2 of mine, both crossed with border, 1 patt, 1 lakie (none related) Both have soft coats?

 

 

If the dog is fluffy and soft the coats been ruined, if the coats still grown and is not hard at all, Get it clipped. stripping a fluffy dog is shit hard work and more like you having your short and curlys pulled out by the handful. If you have not ever stripped a terrier before you will have a hard job and your dog will f***ing hate it

To be honest its one of thoes things you have to see yourself before deciding what to do, find someone who can strip out a terrier propley, thats how i learned

As a professional groomer i can advise that you can still strip this coat & bring it back to how it should be, god knows why people buy wire coated breeds if they are going to clip the lot off & ruin the dogs natural protection against the eliments. A dog with a soft coat will not do well in cold weather if you are going to work it by an chance. So get a stripping knife & start removing the dead fluffy hair once it starts to regrow, just run the stripping knife through the coat & you will see the soft stuff start to come away this will encourage re growth of a harsher top coat, once the wire coat starts to come through you can then begin to strip it properly with finger & thumb by pulling the coat when its ready. it may take a year to get a coat back on the dog but its well worth it because you don't have a dog that grows a profuse coat which it will do when clipped it grows alot more than a stripped one & you won't get the oily skin problems which a clipped terrier can get, seen many wire foxes & westies in that should really have stripped coats but owners have clipped them & the skins gone greasy & often westies have westie rash.

Spot on Cumbrian Jack, years back i had a Border dog and for some reason listened to the idle sods who clipper their dogs,

 

BIG MISTAKE

 

His coat went to rat sh*t,offered no protection at all and come the next spring/summer he was at the vets for the first time in his life, covered in sores bites rashes ,you name it.

 

Had to have anti biotics and protein jabs to bring him round but was never the same again.

 

A blokes spaniel i know went the same way,we put it down to briars,thornes and insects in the end but like i say,the dog never fully recovered to his proper old selve.
