ferret_uk 4
Am sure they must be a few gun dog trainers on here who can learn me the basics please Quote Link to post
butcherboy 68
It might only be beating & picking up but it's still a lot learn. Best advice is get yourself a book or DVD. Joe Irvings book is good for spaniels. If you can afford to go to a trainer then a good investment. Enjoy the training Quote Link to post

lewismac1 1
It depend's what job you are going to be doing. If it's alway's going to be pickng up then you could mabey look at buying a Lab? Springer's are a bit of a handfull for a first time trainer... Quote Link to post
Blakloks 5
just read books and learn as you go the main things with spaniels is obedience try and keep them in close(10-15 yards) do alot of heel work, sit stay, stop whistle you will find it hard but really really rewarding. Only thing is im sick of the sound of my bloody voice sometimes but when the day comes when your dog picks its first bird or flushes a bird for a gun well worth it, just do it on your own and put a thread up if you get stuck Quote Link to post

butcherboy 68
Using a good trainer will make huge differences to you if it's your 1st dog. Try Toonarmy spaniels for your area (ish) Quote Link to post
teknystoddy 0
A good place to start will be with your keeper friend, he will be able to put you in touch with a breeder of good pups, I think that this is the best time of year to get one. He will also be able to introduce you to other beaters and those who use their dogs for picking up, they will be able to help you with trainig your pup. When you get one, feel free to PM me and I will give you any help that I can, although Im no expert. Like everything else, youll get out of a pup what you put into it. All the best, TT.
