Lola 0
Casper caught his first full grown rabbit today. Now all I need to know is how do I skin it and prepare it. Not sure I want to eat it. But I do want the skin to use to train him. He did retrieve it live but only by the skin of it's teeth. Also it was an accident catch as he was muzzled....obviously didn't put him off. I also need to know how to dispatch it because I hated seeing it moving still. Any help and advice be great. I'll post a pic once I download them. cheers Lola Quote Link to post
moxy 617
A good sharp blow to the back of the head should do the trick, failing that hold the back legs in one hand and the head firmly in the other and stretch out the neck with a good tug. To skin, use a sharp knife and puncture just below the rib cage and draw the blade down to the tail, making sure as to not go too deep and puncture the insides. Open the cavity and remove the innards. The hole you have created, you should be able to peel the stomach skin and the fur appart, creating a good sized hole between the two, squeeze your hand across the back of the rabbit through the hole till you reach the other side. Now hold the rabbits back firmly and pull the pelt up towards the tail untill it all seperates and tears off at the feet, the tail will usually remain attatched, now do the same and pull the pelt down to the head untill all removed. You could remove the head and legs prior to skinning to make the job a little easier. Once you have done it once or twice you will soon find your own method. Quote Link to post

Lola 0
Well guys...I did it. One intact pelt. Good job I aint squeamish. It's tougher than you'd think, he didn't want to part with his skin thats for sure . Do I need to do anything to the pelt to stop it rotting or will it be ok? Quote Link to post
