Right folks, quick one. As I have posted, I got a Howa in 204 which doesn't shoot 40 grain ammo. I sent it back to Highland Outdoors and progress hasn't been as quick as I'd hoped. Decision time on it is next week.

If they haven't moved forward on getting this one fixed/replaced, I will have two options really:

1. a Howa in 243

2. the Remington 700 LVSF 204 Ruger I didn't get before, which is used. The Howa is new.

I went with 204 Ruger because in theory it offers rabbit and fox control at 243 ranges, but with less powder, less noise and less recoil (which isn't a massive issue, but seeing bullet hits at night is handy). I would still like those things, but I'm wondering if I can be arsed...

243 works, I know that from my old one (although I didn't like that rifle much). And added to that if I get another 204 issue it's yet more one-for-one variations, and Kidlington must be fed up with me by now!

So, what you think, stick with 204, or go back to 243?

why dont you save some money and get the howa 204 that skanny is selling on the bbs. its a shooter, comes with mounts, dies, dewey rod, bore guide, and post to your rfd !

its doing under a inch at 200 yards so you cant moan at that ! all for £375 pound ! im sure he would take you out to shoot it to if you went to pick it up. :whistling:

From memory your requirement is that it must shoot 39/40 gr bullets and not the 32 gr that, as far as I know, all factory rifles are twisted for.

It seems that some rifles will shoot 40 gr and others will not. As I have previously stated my Howa shoots 40 gr factory ammo superbly, it's a heavy stainless barrel.

I truly believe that it is hit and miss if a given rifle will shoot 40 gr or not. The yanks who wish to seriously use the heavier bullets seem to go the re barrel route.

Should you go for a different make there is no guarantee that it will shoot them. I suppose the only guaranteed option would be to source a s/h one that shoots 40 gr or a new one from somewhere you can try before you buy.

I would add again that it is worth persevering because it really is a superb caliber.

why would you want to own cheap junk,i have heard so many people talking badly of howa recently.....as long as you can have a go with the remington and it shoots i wouldnt hesitate...GET THE REMINGTON :victory::victory: they really are good...as for calibre choice i havnt got any expieriance of 204 but if you get one and like it im sure you will let us know. :notworthy: ...i went for 22-250 rather than 243 because i didnt know what was myth or truth about them... :gunsmilie:

Well the guy who is selling the Remington assures me that it will shoot the 40gr to 3/4 inch at 100 yards, so that should do I guess. My only worry was barrel life on this gun, I don't know how much ammo it's had, and even if I ask him it will be a (probably poor) guesstimate...

I don't have firearms sales section on the BBS sadly, so didn't know. Tbh the shop in question is working hard for me so I think unless they take the piss at any stage they can keep some of my money at least.

Go back to the 243 you know it makes sense, 204 was and I say was the latest money spinner from the guntrade sort of neither here or there caliber over priced hard to sell second hand, I wont start nameing all them that bought them and then started to sell less than a year down the line :whistling: you probably know most of em anyway from your time on that cack site you used to post on :victory:

There is no hard and fast rule to weather it will shoot or not from a factory rifle depends on each gun in question....

my .243 would never stabilise a 100g bullet but my mate would shoot them great both same guns... twist rate etc...

Its a good cal. no doubt about it but the one shooting 3/4 inch at 100 i would leave,

It should be shooting at least 1/2 inch in the right hands, so test fire if possible,

good luck.

why does everyone keep banging on about 243 all the time?? yes its a good calibre but why not try/own somthing else?? the 204 for long range fox/rabbit/crow control..243 is the smallest allowed calibre for deer and slightly over kill on fox....when the hmr first came out plenty of people harped on its the new must have calibre and it'll be gone tommorow..........be differant try somthing new..i really piss's me off with all the talk of short barrel life blar blar blar....rifles are just toys at the end of the day..

That's with factory ammo though Snap, seemed OK to me tbh. Will check if I can test it though...

i would still advise you try and get a shot off with whichever one you want then you will know what its capable off, and only then....

I will try to get a few shots with it before actually buying, I think they might sort it given that they're bending over backwards at the moment, very good service.

If not the Remington, then let's assume I stay with 204 for the moment...

Which one? There's a new Remington 700 SPS which is OK in terms of price but not cut (not a big deal but would be better if it was).

Garlands said they have one 204 Ruger light-barreled Savage weather warrior left - worth a look? I suspect the price could be high though.
