Guest gaz100604
i prefer dogs myself but i suppose both will do the job... the question of what type of work you want to do with your lurcher should give you what type ofbreeding you want to go for ie...ferreting..wippet or beddy cross....lamping rabbits the same with saluki and collie in the mix....if its bigger game then bull is what alot go for... big rabbits more saluki in the breeding....e.t.c. *ferrifleboy 19
my first working dog was the whippet x greyhound i have now, i chose this breeding because i only wanted her to catch rabbits and nothing bigger which her breeding is excellent for. i was told to get a bitch as they are more loyal, dont stray when a dog in your area is in heat and dont cock their leg at every other lamp post on a walk. but again sex is personal choice as others have posted their views on.. all the best. skycat 6,174
Some good and sensible replies so far, but I'd add that whether you go for a dog or a bitch, I'd definitely choose a reasonably submissive pup for your first dog. If you pick a dominant temperament you could find yourself in a spot of bother as all dogs are excellent at reading their owners and it takes them no time at all to suss out if you have the necessary minerals and experience at dealing with them. If you go and look at a litter of pups make sure you see both the parents and see what their temperaments are like. Make sure they are both good working animals, and their parents before them if possible. Pups often throw to the grandparents more than the parents. Take someone who's opinion regarding dogs you really respect and someone who knows what they are on about. It doesn't matter if it is someone in lurchers or not: pups are pups and when it comes to picking the one for you the person you take with you will take into account your temperament etc. What you want to do is pick the pup that is the most responsive without necessarily being in your face and pushy (avoid that one as it is more likely to be dominant). Hope this helps a bit. Quote Link to post

Just a pain when the bitch is out of work for 2 weeks during her season. dose anyone run there dog while in height obviosly it would have to be run solo or with bitches, the reason i ask is a mate of mine who is into his grey's and he leaves his dogs off for about 6weeks if they break down? Thats why i would go for a dog and not a bitch. Some bitches [lurchers] can take 4-6 weeks before they are ready run again, so twice a year, and if you hunt say 6-7 months of the year, it can be a feckin pain when you really need a dog. And if you have 2 bitches, alot of times when one goes in Heat the other one will follow , dogs are alot easy to have, and you can work them when ever you want. Quote Link to post
Lennard 10
It does not matter so much just what you come across. I would always go for something of medium size so with whippet types I would tend to pick a dog and with bigger a bitch. I own a dog and a bitch and both are a pain in the *ss in their own way. The bitch is not spayed so her behaviour changes during the year, say she is unusable for at least 2 months due to not listening well followed by the real heat and sometimes a false pregnancy. She is very soft, when I am just a little bit harsh she already behaves like I am molesting her. The dog is stable, his behaviour does not change in the year really. He is more frolicky than the bitch and always up for action. He is pretty perfect, obedient, fast and a smart catcher of game. Only he is aggressive towards dogs and gets into fights. And he is distrustful of people and also bites people. Not that hard but a good bruise was the result up to now. Funny thing is that his victims are all relatively young women who got bitten in their calfs or *ss. The bitch would never bite anyone. Edited March 12, 2009 by Lennard Quote Link to post
Richie10 345
I have a wheatenxsaluki, and for a first choice I think that it might have been a bit of a mistake! He is very headstrong and doesn't like to come to the call that much. He has only really started being walk the last week and he is just hitting 5 months. Had to wait for injections. Anyone have any tips in trying to turn him around? I get to spend around 3 hours a day with him which I don't think is enough. Cheers Rich Quote Link to post

I would definitely recommend clicker training though. Quote Link to post
