Try made to order things for people who want something a bit different from the norm...for example, it took me months to find a budgie cage actually suitable for a budgie (why do people think birds fly like helicopters!) I would have paid good money for a hand made wooden one.

The wild bird food trade is massive at the mo, but the prices are rediculous, so if your OH could make reasonably priced bird tables/feeders...again something a bit different from the norm?

Composting is also very popular...hand made compost bins for the smaller property...tool storage, planters?

Dog coats, PJ's, halties, all seem to be very fashionable at the mo?

JPTfellterrier, does the garden centre begin with an 'H' :D

great stuff thanks hippychick some good ideas, never thought about composting bins, the otherhalfs been reading a book on self sufficiency just out of general interest today and got a couple of possible ideas from that!

HI if you are going to Selby or any of the other big game fairs speak face to face with the big dog food sellers usually giving away free sample of try this try that and explain your plans they will all be after buisness with the times as they are and you could get some good offers from them and dealing face to face has gotta be better than just a email or voice on the phone !!!! the local pet food store here still seems busy when ever i go in there are a few ideas about with saw dust / straw / hay etc buy in big bulk bags (saw dust for example £4 a bag) from timber merchants and rebag into small ones ok take time but profits could be 500% on a bag !!!! good luck !!!

If you've got the space and the demand, having feed stocked for chickens, horses etc might help get more folks in.

What I'd like to see in my local place is quality raw frozen food. I have to go to Blackburn for it at the moment: but it's good quality minced chicken and chopped tripe. It would be nicer tho if they also carried rabbit, beef, lamb etc. I have to go elsewhere yet again for that, and it's the overprocessed AMP stuff which is like frozen slop. Sure it wouldn't be too hard to find a supplier for your shop?
