Can anybody recommend a good variety of tomatoes for me to grow this year?

I think i grew alicante last year and was not that impressed.

I'm after quality rather than quantity.

Thanks

Shepp

Shirley mate.Nice size nice colour and good disease resistance. I think last year the weather was that bad everyone had a torrid time with crops

Cheers for that, yes mine were all flesh and no flavour.

I grew gardeners delight for many years but the best cherry tomato i ever grew was sungold. It cropped early long long trusses of orange tomato's and they never seemed to stop.Best thing was it was vine and not a bush type which suited me better

Have you seen those hundreds and thousands variety?.

Loads of little toms from a flowering basket.

I fancy having a grow at those.

When you talk about Tomatos you are talking personal taste. To me Shirleys while being a good cropper lacks somewhat in the taste department. Alicante, Moneymaker and Alisa Craig are pretty much the same. I have tried a few heritage varieties along with some exotic varieties. Out of the heritage varieties I would recommend Hearald not too bad a cropper but to me brilliant taste, although they are prone to greenback so keep the greenhouse well shaded. Out of the exotic varieties, while they are not in the same class to the more moden varieties yield wise there are some spectaculer and unusual tastes to be had with them.

For an outdoor tomato I am caught between Mermandé and Gardeners Delight both given a fair summer are tops for taste, but yet again totally different.

Yes those are my personal tastes. I don't garden anymore (difficult in a flat) but when i did grow up to 2 years ago i always tried a new variety alongside the 2 i mentioned to see how they got on.I found some cropped heavier without a great deal of flavour and some cropped lighter and more flavour. At the end of the day its each to their own and what suits your methods

rouge de mamande ,i guess you would get them in england ,i grew them for the first time this year and the few i got tasted superb. everyone here had a bad year for toms ,bush fires ,very hot summer ,drought ,etc . the end of our season now .why not plant a variety .i even stuck a fine piece of copper wire through the stalk base of one bush ,as someone at work said to ,ha ,dont know if that did any good as twas a crap season .cheers .
