Catch rate

Recommended Posts

I was watching a DVD this afternoon of some blokes running foxes with lurchers doubled up and was surprised at their catch rate , I would say more escaped than got caught.

I dont have any experience of lamping foxes with lurchers but after reading posts on here thought you would catch more than got away , am I wrong ??

A lot of slips were at foxes which were near hedges , fences , wood edge etc . Now I was thinking what is the point in slipping dogs if they dont have a chance of catching ??? Now I know where lamp shy foxes come from.

What would you say is a decent percentage catch rate ???

Its 50/50 dogs stands a good chance and fox stands a good chance as it knows exactly where it wants to head,if its a good fence and you can get up to it the dog will do its best to push the fox away from the fence! To be honest foxes bite the bullet if theres 10 for you to shoot and you get 5 as they wernt not safe shots well done same goes for the dog but at least we can run the quarry were you cant as the safe shot is important! Dont like to double up either! 1 dog and its quarry and thats it!

well, most on here will tell you they only ran them single handed and caught say 90 percent  but most ran them doubled up, in the day time bushing etc id have expected 9 out of 10 ... night time its down to the man thats had the dogs in his hands, a sensible slipper should be getting 7 or 8 out of 10, a gun ho chav with blood on his mind slipping at anything no matter how close to cover would have only been getting 2 or 3 out of 10 if that, these are the folk i mentioned in my first sentence..... (then there was the folk that chace them with a car and a dog , but thats a different story  )

well said :clapper: i belive a dog could do more than the bullet depending on location etc fence lines foxes arent to much of a problem if you go the right way about it !

Depends where your lamping, how your lamping, what dogs your running.

These were very large fields , lamping from the road and slipping dogs once fox spotted or called and I think using bull crosses.

If you were shooting these foxes you would have cleaned up !!!

foxing in the lamp. a dog cant do as well as a rifle. the rifle should get nine out of ten ;) a single dog will be lucky to get three out of ten. :) foxes seen that is not slips

If every shots a safe shot you'll bag them but everyone hunts over different ground, and trust me a dog would do 10 out of 10 in the right hands and ground! 3 out of 10

anyone can pull a trigger , if you miss ... ahh well , if you hit its the best shot ever , try training a dog from seed and watch it , and nurture it to adult hood , ............. thats hunting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

your going off topic he is asking about catch rates not what you think is hunting and what isnt....but yes in days gone by , if you saw 10 not running them all, and taking 3 from that 10 singlehanded you would have been doing ok.... certainly more realistic than some figures iv heard quoted on here ;)

:clapper: you must have good ground and a good dog. :clapper: i know very good dogs that cant do that with rabbits. i still say that a rifle in the right hands will be more efficient than a good dog in the right hands.
