mick the fish 9
I got one in a sale over xmas time, but i keep nesting it , any tips would be great ive got the drag set so it just holds the weight of the lure, is this right Cheers Mick Quote Link to post
fin and fur 2
Mick hi daft question but do you thumb the spool when the lure hits the water setting the drag to any setting whatsoever will have no effect on casting or any subsequent birds nesting of line as the reel will be in free spool when casting, the drag being only effectual when the reel is in gear so long as you place your thumb on the spool when the lure hits the water to prevent the spool from continuing to rotate you should be fine i can think of no other reason for birds nesting than this, but appologise in advance if you think i am trying to teach granny to suck eggs i used to sea fish (beach casting) quite a bit with multipliers and experienced some really severe birds nesting when i failed to thumb the spool in time all the best fin & fur Quote Link to post
auld salmon 28
try holding the rod up then let the lure drop from about 5 feet it it still free spoolls when hits the ground then tighten it up a little more till it stops but remember depends on the weight of the lure your using sometimes if its too tight then this stops the casting distance it just takes time and patience sometimes if the brake is too tight its shortens the casting too hope this helps but keep trying it took me a while to get used to mine but there good tools when working when i got my first 1 it ended up in the cupboard for a few year :realmad: :realmad: hope this helps Quote Link to post
andy s410c 61
What sort of reel is it???Are you just using small spinners 25-50g??You can control the birdnests by several methods.....By the reels braking system ie centrifugal(brake blocks) or magnetic if fitted, the thickness(viscosity) of the oil in the bearings, end tension on the spool spindle but this puts a lot of pressure on the bearings, drop your line level to under 5mm of the spool lip if possible & as previously said thumb the spool during & when the lure hits the water.... droid 11
Keep practising mate. It takes a while, as auld salmon alluded to, but if you just concentrate on casting without worrying about distance, then the thumb co-ordination comes right in the end. Quote Link to post
