terrier.2 123
sat here debating gameness in working dogs..one of us thinks the gameness comes from the bull blood that has been injected periodically,i think the gameness was already there and the bull has added determination and strength.the other thinks the average working terrier was losing its gameness until bull was added, but we are even arguing over what we determine as gameness..opinions please Quote Link to post
coneycatcher17 3
I agree but too much bull gives you a good dog but its no good when hes in the pen recuperating all the time. Quote Link to post
Guest AngelicAcid
Gameness -- wants to get stuck in? Eager -- to get to ground and work quarry not fight it? Does Bull Blood take sense in an earth dog away and make it want to fight quarry and not work it ie working terrier? This should make a very good thread. Quote Link to post
YOKEL 2,214
I.M.O. A good honest earthdog is as game as any other breed out there & does not need the inclusion of any other breed to make him more so, he enters an alien enviroment, cramped of space, lacking in air and in total darkness he locates his quarry, bottles him up and stays with him for as long as required whilst taking (on occasion) severe punishment. If he was losing gameness, i do'nt think it was down to the lack of bull blood, just down to people breeding off of inferior animals/untested stock. work em hard and breed from the best. J.M.O... BBB 7
if you get the right type of working terrier .be it lakeland, patterdale, border ect. they are the gamest dogs around and dont need bull blood . they will tuff it out in the worst conditions.winning or losing they will stay to the end. and i believe are gamer than any of the bull breeds. 1 Quote Link to post

mouse 282
patt, russell, lakie ,fell whatever..the right breeding and a proper start and they will be game in my eyes.no need for any bull blood.may make them harder but then they are in kennells for weeks on end where a sensible but game dog will graft day after day and week after week.i no which i prefer.cheers mouse. matty73 4
bull blood seems to be creeping into most breeds as a sort of quick fix for gameness but give me a sensible terrier that can keep pressure on fox mixing with it only when has to any day .seen some extremely hard terriers that could deal with fox that refused to budge without much fuss and not a touch of bullblood in thier makeup just best to best not much to look at but not bred to show just work .im looking for a patterdale dog to line my bitch without any bull in its makeup just a good honest worker Quote Link to post
desertdog 149
good thread, i keep borders myself, the dog i have is game and works his quarry well,i have bred him to my bitch who is also very game, they stay put when the bullets start flying, and that is what counts at the end of the day, worker to worker everytime no room for weakness, stay and slay, to many terriers are being bred to show and the point of keeping working terriers is being lost, and why would you want bullblood?, id sooner have one good game dog in my kennel than six that have no brain that get stuck in and smashed up then you end up with no dogs because of injury.
