what know how have you tried to pass on jessy ,how to get peoples backs up you seem to get a kick out of stirring it. ive bin in the game for over 25yrs and still consider myself a novice ive bin lucky enough to have bin around some true countrymen 60yrs plus experience at getting the best out of their dogs i wont mention names because not trying to name drop but some have been in books with their dogs because they really did have knowledge and the right attitude as well as top drawer dogs not saying seen it all but very much doubt your acheivements would make me swoon sorry to burst your balloon

books dont mean a thing only writen to make money .i to know most that have writen them ,most of them dont hold a candle to some of the people i know and have known and their dogs .not trying to get peoples backs up i just reply the only way i know {strait with no strings atached}and yes it is just gone 1 and tonight for a change im not out but still cant sleep because of my body clock .

TO BE HONEST , JESSY'S NOT REALY DOING OWT MUCH DIFFRENTO EVRY ONE ELSE.

 

LET ME EXPLIAN, HE SAYS HIMSELF HIS DOG DIDN'T CATCH TILL 5 1'2 MONTH OLD, THERES A LOT OF LADS ON HERE THAT START THERE DOGS AROUND THE 6 MONTH AGE, ANYWAY SO NO DIFRENCE REALY.

 

I MYSELF TAKE ANY PUPS I HAVE OUT FERRETING FROM ABOUT 4 MONTH OF AGE , AS DO LOADS OF OTHERS ON HERE.

 

AS THEY SAY THERE NOT LEARNING OWT STUCK IN THE KENNEL.

 

THE ONLY BIT I WOULD DIFFER ON IS THE LENGTH OF TIME A YOUG PUP WILL SPEND OUT IN THE FIELD , ALOT OF CHAPS WOULD THINK 4 HOURS BEING TO LONG ,

 

IF IT WORKS FOR YOU THEN FINE WE ALL HAVE OUR OWN WAYS.

 

 

I WILL SAY THIS THOUGH, ITS A BIT STRONG THINKING THAT ALL THE BEST DOGS ARE STARTED THIS WAY. THERE ARE PLENTY OF CRACKING DOGS THAT HAVENT BEEN STARTED TILL THERE FIRST BIRTHDAY. IN FACT DOGS THAT HAVE GOT BIGGER BAGS

 

BUT LIKE I SAY IF IT WORKS FOR YOU , THATS THE MAIN THING

tomo i fully agree with what your saying ,and of course there are dogs that pick things up later in life ,i have not said that all the best dogs start this way ,i have only ever agreed to this way of training a pup ,nothing less nothing more .

Good sensible post there Tomo I always treat each pup as an individual and base when I start them off and how on how well they are coming along for their age and how mature I think they are, theres no set rules each pup is different some are ready at a younger age than others. I do think a 4 hour walk is too much for a very young puppy though, it would be better to half the time and break it down into 2 or 3 walks rather than one huge long one, but each to their own I suppose

as fare as time out for a pup ,what realy is the difference ,if a pup was tired after 1 hour you would not make it walk 2 hours ,but you say you would be happy to walk a pup that long if it was ok ,its the same with me if i looks like it is still enjoying its self after 4 hours and it is not showing any sign of stress then what is the difference ,none .dont get me wrong i would stop as soon as it was not happy {this is the point that every one is not seeing }you are all asuming that we are forsing them to do it .well i for one am not ,neither is grit .

ok without doubt young pups will learn nothing in the kennel most im sure do get out and about

 

 

 

i think its more about not running the arse of them at a young age more risk of injurywith under developed bone and muscle

 

 

ok having said that an unfit dog of any age will stand more chance of injury

 

regarding 44 rabbits in 4 hours that would need a bloody good dog of any age to atchieve that

I was at a friends house the other day and the topic of taking pups out lamping was brought to my attention buy him after he had read about someone taking there pup out at a young age on this site so i have joined this site to tell you a little about my working dog. I have a four and a half year old lurchur dog called Trigger. Trigger started his nights out lamping at only 8 weeks old he was taken almost every night for up to four hours walking he had practicly no help at all from me to overcome any fence or obsticle after a couple of weeks of this he started to improve on the time it was taking to get through the fences and overcome whatever obsticals we may have come across. Each evening we got home i noticed the nettle stings had been getting to him has he couldnt lie still for half an hour or so when we got back home. however this never took him long to get used to and never stoped him pushing through them on any nights lamping. Buy the age of 12 weeks he was allready showing great intrest in what was going on when my other lamping dog was giving me the rabbit she had caught. When he was exactly 4 months to the day i took trigger and his sister who one of my friends owned out for a nights lamping and he had allredy gained enough knowledge to work the lamp and would go down the beem and would even make a put for a squatter this was the night the pups caught there very first rabbit on the lamp. From that night onwards trigger went lamping on his own and worked the beam well he was unable to catch his first single handed rabbit untill 5 and half months buy this time he was getting over or through 98% of fences and i never had to worry about him. As the last couple of the lamping season months past he got bigger and the amount of rabbits he caught got bigger. At the age of 12 months the second season was just starting for trigger buy this time he had the brains and stamina to catch double figures for fun and our nights out have been very rewarding. When he was 16 months old i run him with a whippetXbedlington on the lamp and went home having caught 51 rabbits both dogs run together on every rabbit. The past twelve months of work he had done from the age of 8 weeks i belive had developed him with both the brains and the stamina to be able to do this. since then he has caught many large amounts he catchs 20s and 30s often when lamping and has had great sucksess on other UK quarry. he has caught 44 rabbits on his best night out on his own it did take him just over 4 hours to catch them but he done it. the last night in september last year again running him at the same time as another dog we managed to catch 52 rabbits thats both dogs together. I totally agree with taking pups out at only 8 weeks old it is the only way to get an outstanding dog. I would go as far as saying that a lurcher who hasnt had this sort of up bringing is no where near in the same league as a dog that goes out at 8 weeks old. Trigger has grown into a strong dog with good strong feet end teeth and is very well educated and inteligent which i owe to taking him out so young he is still as keen as ever and hardly picks up injurys. he wouldnt of been half the dog he is now if he didnt have a early education.

I would like to see one of these dogs that have been started on there first birthday with the stamina to catch a larger bag. I have yet to come across a dog that has been started on its first birthday that has that fitness. ITS NOT NATURAL. it has to be worked on i cant see how anything can stop at home for a year and suddenly be super fit or get super fit. 44 rabbits in four hours is a rabbit every 6 minutes that needs some sort of stamina and heart

 

just because the dogs not started till around its first birthday , dont think for one miniute that the dogs been sat in kennel. alot of fitnes work has gone on befor those first few nights out. all i meant was some people like there dog to catch its first bunny around about the year old mark

 

 

also i think you should go through old posts on this site, there are lots of lads with very large bags

Ive read over these topics/threads for a good 4 days and spoke before i thought about it but looking back my pup which my mate had before me we had her out and if she caught a bunnys she caught it but between ages here goes 0-3months bonding 3-9 1/2months out watching everything and afterwards is where i am running her 3-4 nights a week!!
