big_mik 0
DO YOU THINK I SHOULD BRING HIS WEIGHT DOWN A LITTLE THEN? Quote Link to post
jasper65 6
I wouldn't want to say that mate to be honest without knowing more and not seeing the bird, it could be alot of other reasons like confidence or he's just not over commiting himself on them as yet. I'm sure when he has had a few he might go for the odd swim .... Perhaps he just can't swim and some armbands might help just kidding mate.... Jasper Quote Link to post
trappa 517
I might be reading this wrong, but it wouldnt be great practise to cast your birds at ducks in water regardless of the waters size. If she is going for anything out of water, but refusing them in water makes sense to me, ive seen birds nearly drown when binding to a fowl in water. Why are you not trying to flush the ducks from the water?? This would be the most sensible and logical thinking. apologies if i have read your thread wrong Quote Link to post

It certainly wouldn't stop me slipping a bird at Ducks getting off a Pond or River bank! I'm sure there's far more fatalities on power lines and other obstacles...... Jasper Quote Link to post

gsi2000stokie 5
my fhh nearly drowned in november after taking a duck she literally soaked the water up like a sponge but luckily tangled up a bit on some roots, i really wouldnt advise going into water but theres not much reason not too of course infact i like too fly her at waterbirds and she even had 4 rats toward the end of feb. i had a shock as much as she did after wading in after her. its not good when ye nu*ts shrivel in less than a second. i would say to ye exercise a bit more and 1 less chick the day before your out and about which usually helps me to get mine flying at pheasant. Dolphin lover 0
My mate had a Harris and he trained it to go in water by leaving it in a room with the gold fish. Then when it was wound up enough he'd let it loose then, went straight in apparently. Hope this helps mate Quote Link to post

josh-waddingham 13
it is usual for a harris to refuse fowl on top of water my fhh does the same, and harrises are not the fastest birds either so it is also usual for a harris not to be able to take duck in take off you would atleats need yoru harris at peak fitness! some goshawks can not take ducks so harris doesnt have much chance im not saying it is impossible, im just saying i wouldnt worry about it if i was you. although ducks are proberly the easiest for teh harris to take as the bird is lifting as they start off slow and get faster were as pheasants start fast get slower, dont drop his weight. maybe it is best that teh bird doesnt go into water for teh ducks but if you really want him to i would feed the bird mallard with feathers just chuck the hole bird to you harris so he knows that theres meat on the birds and then get the harris on the lure but everytime the harris come to the lure dont make him miss it make sure he gets it every time other wise he will go mardy as they do lol there not liek falcons! josh-waddingham 13
hi get yourself a dog and send that in the water job done spot on if yur using a gos, but thses harris hawks are slow and unsteady with dogs most of the time even though sometimes can be very calm with dogs but very easily put off quarry by the smallest of movements from the dog!
