Guest jt750
I'd say depends on the size of your dog. Small whirrier type start about 8 months old and introduce small hurdles into the retrieve game so it gets used to going over them and build it up over time. A heavier bull x type start the same age but don't get them jumping too high as the stress on the growing points from landing can do them irrepairable damage Quote Link to post

Bootsha 1,306
The best way I have found is to put a (low and small) piece of wood at the entrance to the kennel / run, every time the pup wants and does come out it will cross this in-ofensive barrier, pups I mean any age, 8 weeks even, they see it as an obstacle, but they are already learning to lift their feet up and scramble/ climb over things, teaching themselves without realising it. As the pup grows, raise the piece of wood, it wont be long before that pups doesn't even look at the obstacle and will be hopping over it without a second thought, combine this with your command of "hup" or whatever you want to use, and when your charge is old enough and big enough, you'll be amazed how readily and easily they'll start to jump for you. But what ever you do, take time, barrier no higher than top of legs height at the start. You may think i'm talking rubbish, fair enough, but it works for me, every time, hope it's of some use to you with your querie mate. ATB WAB Quote Link to post
scotty12 1,888
i have heard of this method and has worked with others ..........the way a done it was when she was 6months get my jacket put it over the fence so it cnt see through the fence but also covers the barb wire the dogs usualy climbs up and pushes off to start with and after a few days satrted jumping over the jacket now its jumping fences pretty easily most regular sized fences ......... but people have their own ways ....... GOOD LUCK HAPPY HUNTING Edited February 25, 2009 by scotty12 Quote Link to post
