just wondering what age people would get there dogs to start jumping fences

I'd say depends on the size of your dog. Small whirrier type start about 8 months old and introduce small hurdles into the retrieve game so it gets used to going over them and build it up over time. A heavier bull x type start the same age but don't get them jumping too high as the stress on the growing points from landing can do them irrepairable damage

My Pup's 6 Months and I'm now getting him jumping.. ;)

I know you shouldn't train for long lengths of time but how long would you keep each 'lesson'?

Butch

butch stop him when he is half way over ,that way when you start him again next time , you will be half way there ;) Edited by jessy

The best way I have found is to put a (low and small) piece of wood at the entrance to the kennel / run, every time the pup wants and does come out it will cross this in-ofensive barrier, pups I mean any age, 8 weeks even, they see it as an obstacle, but they are already learning to lift their feet up and scramble/ climb over things, teaching themselves without realising it.

As the pup grows, raise the piece of wood, it wont be long before that pups doesn't even look at the obstacle and will be hopping over it without a second thought, combine this with your command of "hup" or whatever you want to use, and when your charge is old enough and big enough, you'll be amazed how readily and easily they'll start to jump for you. But what ever you do, take time, barrier no higher than top of legs height at the start. You may think i'm talking rubbish, fair enough, but it works for me, every time, hope it's of some use to you with your querie mate.
