Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Got to Martins place at 0600 this morning and we set off for his munty ground .Arrived in good time in the dark and as we climbed to the position ,we could hear a muntie buck barking in some fir plantings to our right and only 60 yds away .As we got to the shooting position ,another muntie barked in answer to the first ,almost certainly a doe .Martin recorded it on his phone ,played it back and was answered immediately from infront of us .A magical start to the morning if ever there was one .Daylight came slowly and the barking stopped as i knew it would .A fox managed to come in unseen along a track and walked below us without getting saluted by either of us ,a very lucky vulpine Nothing else showed at the spot we were at so Martin told me to try a stalk towards the other fields ,big up and downers with a blackthorn thicket bordering a wood at the top.As i entered the first field ,a pair of horses spooked away and bumped a muntie from a thicket nearby .He ran flat out up the hill and stopped on the tree line .Ranged him at 230 yards so i put the cross hairs just above his shoulder and missed him above judgng by the grass that flew up .The deer ran a few yards into a bit of cover but i knew he had to cross open ground to get to the wood .He eventually came out cautiously and i tried another ,this time straight at him and missed below I was very surprised to see him go him go back into the cover and i waited again for him to emerge .He came out the other side this time and i thought about the shot a bit .Put the cross hairs a bit up his neck and squeezed off .Saw him jump slightly and fall down ,never to move again . Better .Walked over and found id hit him a bit far back and in the green abit Up over the next rise i saw 4 more munties at range but the horses were running up behind me now and each little deer clocked me ,stopped and looked straight at me.They arent known for standing long and these were no exception and i was left with an empty field .Excellent morning in good company, looking at different scenery .Cant beat it .Cheers again Martin .
