different styles of hunting with terriers

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow diggin men,

I hunt with 3 border terriers and a lurcher all running loose. The land i hunt is mixed arable and grassland only cover is ditches/hedgerows,any fox i dig is average 3or4 foot deep. My hunting style is i like things quiet as possible i like to let my dogs use their noses and knowledge without me interfering. When we walk the fields my dogs range from 2 to 20 yards from me any further i call them up. Most of the time the lurcher [whippet/bedlington/greyhound] is the first to scent game almost telling the terriers where the game is and trying to guess which side of the ditch to go to for the bolt.

My question is, what is the best style as i have hunted with lads that are constantly at their dogs making them go into every rabbit creep, hissin them on and only happy if their terriers are permanently in the cover whether theres game there or not. I have also watched lads beat the cover with sticks and scream like banshees if their dogs look like they are on a good scent. I have also hunted with lads who crack up if their dogs go further than 2 yards from them. And last and most certantly least we have all met the lad who spends the day cursin and swearin at uncontrolled dogs miles in front of him and worrying any stock he meets.

All comments welcome

I think I would have a similar style too yourself. I let the dogs do their thing, and try and be quiet. None of them head to far out of sight unless in woodland. They all return promptly on a whistle. I let them do what they think is best, they have the better noses. They don't seem to want to go too far from me anyway. I tryu to get into a place that I can see well, and just let them go do what they want. All of them are under control, and it pays well, cos I have had the terrierXspaniel lift sitters out of long grass that I wouldn't have even looked at, amd nothing out of cover I have encouraged them into, and all manner of feather flushed from cover. I enjoy watching them do their job, cos they can do it better than I could.
