what dog to start with?

Recommended Posts

I am looking to get a terrier it will be my first so nothing that will eat me alive lol, its to do I bit of digging and ratting with I have a whippet at 12 months who has just started working on the lamp I have done a bit of ratting with her but a terrier would probably be better suited. I was thinking of getting a jack rustle as someone I went digging with had an old strain and they were brilliant. I like patterdales but not sure, ive been told they are complete nutters so mite not be the best dog to start with. And please no one suggest Plummer that’s a definite no just that name makes me feel  sorry im not being nasty just my opinion, i was also thinking maby a borderXlakeland what do you think?

Ive got a patterdale mate. It was also my first terrier, hes 11 months old today and hes brilliant. Yes they are hard dogs and they need to be treat hard at first to get them to know who the boss is as they do try and rule the roost but once dominated they are ace. Mine will try and kill anything that gets in its way. I do recommend them mate

I dont know where patterdales got this reputation for being headbangers from.Yes a good patterdale is game it will engage its fox and kill it,but the best patterdales Ive seen have always been of decent temperament and quiet round the house and kennel. If I was starting out in terriers the only thing I would insist on is that there is a history of workers in his bloodlines be that russel, lakeland,Border or even plummer lol.

I have been planning to get a patterdale pup of a nearby hunt, so I know it will come from working stock but

I have two young babies, I must admit to being a bit worried due to the comments on here about patts,

I dont perticularly want to stick my kids in any danger, and be wearing patterdale dog slippers after a few weeks :D costing £150

Is it just down to training? or are these patts little barstewards in general?

All I can suggest is to have a look at both parents if you would feel confident with the parents then a pup from them would probably be ok.

I have terriers that have excellent temperaments, having said that I would never leave any dog with any child unsupervised its asking for trouble.JMO

A Border terrier is not a good dog to start with as they are easy to ruin and usually late to enter. jack russels of a good strain will suffice, patterdales are head strong but they are brilliant dogs if the owner trains it correctly. Lakelans are earlier to enter usually.

Patterdalexlakeland maybe?

I keep Patterdales n i have 3 kids they can swing em round by there tails n they stil wouldn't curl a lip up.

The problem is people keep a certain breed n they genrally stick t them so in there mind that type of terrier is the bee's knees 4 they have had little trouble with them, But if u talk t plenty of people [bANNED TEXT] has always a horror story t tell bout a certain breed b it russells, borders, lakey's or patts.

Also 90% of people on here talk total bollocks n haven't got a feckin clue what there on about!

Blando

There r very good terriers out there, just take yr time n have a good look about .

Rat snatcher

Just because a terrier come's from a hunt, it doesn't make it a good 1!

I've got 8 Jacks and 4 Patts. Of the 8 Jacks there are two that have to be watched around the grandkids and one that can't be with them at all. Of the 4 Patts (all different lines, two females and two males) they are all golden around the grandkids. My "Patts" lean toward more the "Fell" type and don't show a lot of Bull terrier in them  and that might make a difference? Where I got my Patts they don't keep fighters and biters, just good steady workers that can get along (for the most part) so the name of the game is to know what you are getting. Hard to do when the working terrier folks are getting to be more and more a closed society out of necessity.

All terriers are quite mad when young. i have owned jacks, staffs and kerry blues(Irish working line) and now a plummer. The jacks that i had were nuts and were prone to destroying things and the kerrys, well just say the ones i had wre completely insane and wanted to bite everything including me.

I have owned a plummer from old original lines for 12 months now. I can't see what the fuss is all about. I mean they are mad but no madder than a russell. I take him with me to work, on trains up north, fishing etc. he is better behaved than all my other dogs. russells can be snappy and mine had to be watched round by kids. not my plummer, the kids can do anything with him. Plummers seem a lot more intelligent and less yappy.

As for hunting my plummer i so much quicker and more powerfull than russells. He runs nearly as fast as my grandads whippet and jumps very well.

Patterdales in my experience are just as mad as a plummer always seeking the upper hand as well.

People who slag off plummers make me laugh - how can a pt be that much more of a handful - remember all dogs are individuals and if you cant get a plummer to behave you have no hope with patterdales or russells for that matter. You need to spend a lot of time with any terrier to train them well. Problem is when people fail or cant cope with a certain dog it is always the breeds fault. Sad people with to big an ego i say..
